2010 Land Rover LR4
2010 Land Rover LR4
Land Rovers' LR4 may well offer more capabilities than many perspective buyers will ever need or even use. In these days when the sole use of many SUV's is errands around town or chauffeuring the kids back and forth to school or activities, the LR4 offers a large amount of dedicated off road tech that will never get a workout. This new for 2010 revision of the 2005 Sport Utility Vehicle of the year is a classic upright Land Rover design earned a unanimous win in a Motor Trent 2010 Sport Utility comparison test in Death Valley.

It remains a machine full of luxurious appointments wrapped in one of the most off road capable packages in the automotive world. Improvements to the Iconic Terrain Reponses system, retuning of the already very capable suspension, and new interior full of creature comforts. The best of the new however, is the engine. The LR4 is now using Jaguar's 5.0 liter power plant. This DOHC V-8 featured Direct Injection and produces a prodigious 375 HP, nearly a hundred hp more than the old 4.4 liter it replaces.
The change from LR3 to LR4 isn’t much from the outside, but there is substance to this mid-cycle update.

When I first learned that the LR3 would be gaining a direct-injection engine and changing its name to LR4, I thought the minor changes didn't warrant a new name. I still don't think the new name makes any sense (Does this mean that the LR2 will turn into an LR3 if it's ever refreshed? How confusing will used-vehicle shopping be then?), but I no longer feel the changes are so minor.

The LR3 is much closer to Range Rover status with this new interior. WOW! Very luxurious and, as Phil notes, no longer out of date and lackadaisically put together. Being someone who goes back a lonnnng way with Land Rover, I am especially impressed with its superb over-the-road comfort. The Land Rovers of my youth could ford a stream, climb a mountain, and navigate the jungles of Borneo, but they were top heavy, shook from side to side, and jounced you sick going down the highway. The new LR4 can do it all, that is, go cross-country, off-road or on, in superb style and complete comfort.

Like Phil, I was a bit perplexed when Land Rover put a new name on its updated LR3. But after spending a busy winter weekend in the LR4, it became quite clear to me, too, that Land Rover made some very worthwhile nips and tucks in its work on the LR3+1. The driver-interface areas and materials have been improved by a few notches (are these the most legible gauges ever put into an automobile?); the LED running lights and taillamps look very cool; and the extra horsepower and engine displacement are more than welcome.

Judging by the new-model intros from European carmakers, you'd think the bubble economy was still going strong. At Mercedes-Benz, AMG has been developing a new supercar and a new E63; BMW's M division has laid its hands on the X5 and the X6; Porsche is rolling out the Panamera; and Alfa Romeo has priced its 8C roadster at a cool $300K. It's sort of a collective, "What, me worry?" spoken with a (mostly German) accent.
