2014 Kia Sedona
2014 Kia Sedona

New For 2014

Not as much as we'd hoped. The 2014 Kia Sedona receives new front fascia, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a full leather interior are the most notable updates.

Vehicle Summary

For every ten or so Odysseys that Honda sells, Kia sells one Sedona. The Korean automaker's minivan is low-priced but undesirable. When Kia announced that there would be no Sedona available for the 2013 model year, we were excited. Kia refreshed the Sedona for 2011, so we thought an all-new Sedona might debut for 2014. And since Kia has done such a fantastic job updating all of the models in its lineup, why wouldn't we be excited? And then we got this, the 2014 Kia Sedona. Like the update in 2011, this model year's news focuses on a tweaked grille. It seems, then, that the Sedona's year away didn't do much of anything. Luckily, the Sedona is due for a major overhaul for 2015. The minivan should come out sometime in 2014, and, from what we've seen in spy photos, it will entail much more than a new front fascia.

Overview

There's really only one reason to buy a Kia Sedona: price. The 2014 Kia Sedona starts at $26,750, which is about as little as you'll pay to get into a new minivan these days. Both trim levels, LX and EX, are powered by V-6 engines tied to six-speed automatic transmissions. The current 3.5-liter V-6 replaced a less powerful but bigger V-6 in 2011. The 269-hp engine has no trouble moving the 4450-pound van. The 2014 Kia Sedona is well equipped and has most of the basic features we've come to expect in a big people mover. The base LX trim level gets roof rails, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth, and cruise control. The top-trim EX adds heated front seats, a rearview camera, automatic climate control, a power liftgate, seventeen-inch aluminum wheels, leather-trimmed seats, and two power sliding doors. The EX can also be optioned with a power sunroof, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and navigation. That's not to say that the Sedona gets every dream-minivan feature you can think of. The requisite rear-seat DVD player isn't even available.

That's not the only place the Sedona falls short of its competition. It doesn't match up to its rivals in terms of ride, handling, or refinement. This minivan is aging, and no amount of new lipstick can help that. The next Sedona, slated for the 2015 model year, can't come soon enough. Kia is now proficient at taking bottom-feeder vehicles and transforming them into enviable automobiles, and we look forward to seeing what the automaker can do.

Kia’s Sedona may not be the most exciting vehicle in its lineup, but the minivan is slated for a major overhaul for 2015. Our spy shooters recently caught the 2015 Kia Sedona out testing with a lot less camouflage than the one we saw two weeks ago, revealing much more of the Sedona’s overall shape and profile.

The 2014 Kia Sedona got the most modest of updates. It's no surprise, since our spy photographers caught the all-new 2015 Sedona testing in Europe, and it looks much more stylish that the current box on wheels.
