2011 KIA Forte
2011 KIA Forte
The replacement for the spectra, the Forte is Kia's answer to the likes of the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and the Mazda 3. The Forte was a new model in 2010 and Kia is touting it as a viable competitor to the Japanese imports.

The Forte Sedan offers two different options for engines. A 2.0 liter four with available 5 speed stick or 4 speed auto, producing 156 horsepower. They also offer the top line 2.4 liter four with a 6 speed transmission in either automatic or manual flavors. This larger engine produces 173 horsepower. Kia has added a new model to their Forte lineup for 2011. A five door featuring the same wheelbase as the sedan and similar dimensions in general except for when it comes to storage capacity.

The hatchback model shares its engine with the upper end sedan options. This can again be mated to a 6 speed transmission in either manual or automatic configuration. It is likely similar trim levels will be available as well, including the LX, EX, and the top of the line SX.

Experian Automotive, a group specializing in automotive market analysis, released its second-quarter 2011 report. The results place Hyundai Motor America at the top in corporate loyalty, marking the first time the Korean company has claimed the top spot in the U.S. market. According to Experian, Hyundai’s corporate loyalty rate of 49.6 percent was enough to take the lead away from General Motors and Ford, which scored 48.1 percent and 47.6 percent, respectively.
2011 Hyundai Sonata Profile
The Koreans continue their upward trend for August, with the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Sonata being each brand's hot commodities. Kia sales are up 26.9 percent compared to last August, while Hyundai sales are up 9 percent compared to the same period last year.

The Kia Forte is a perfectly competent, quite acceptable small sedan, and if your heart is set on buying one, by all means do so. But first check out the competition, especially the Mazda 3, the Ford Focus, and the Hyundai Elantra. Each of those cars is more attractive, more refined, and more fuel-efficient than the Forte sedan, yet no more expensive than the Kia.

2011 Hyundai Sonata
Hyundai and Kia have been following a very successful formula of combining fresh styling with impressive fuel economy numbers, bringing out models that are easy on the eyes and easy on the gas tank, like the Hyundai Sonata and the Kia Soul.

The Kia Forte 5-door is new for this year and expands upon the existing sedan and Koup body styles. I like the styling and packaging of the Forte hatchback, but the car could use a little more refinement to match up to its competitors. I drove a Forte sedan two years ago and was rather impressed, but that was a different small-car market. Compared to the latest crop of small cars available in 2011, this Forte 5-door feels cheap and unsatisfying to drive.

Here is the thing about the Forte: when it came out in mid-2009, it was considered near the top of the compact car heap, with its high-quality interior, reasonably fun driving dynamics, and peppy engine. Then the second-generation Mazda 3 launched. And the Chevrolet Cruze. And the Hyundai Elantra. And the 2012 Ford Focus. And the Forte got left behind.

Donny hits it on the nose. The Forte impressed mightily when it came out with its strong styling, attractive interior, and generous platter of standard features and options. When I first drove it, I liked it despite a few flaws. Now, however, I climb into it having recently experienced the new Ford Focus, Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Elantra, and Honda Civic. The Forte's flaws, although still relatively few, are now glaring.

The Forte hatchback is new for 2011, but I didn't realize it existed until the keys to this test car were plunked down on my desk. As my colleagues have noted, the Forte was a big deal and very impressive when it debuted not so long ago, but even the addition of an attractive new body style was overshadowed by all the news that competitors have recently been making in the compact-car segment. The so-called 5-door (a name that drives this copy editor crazy, by the way -- rear hatchbacks are really doors?) starts off at $1900 more than the sedan, but I think it's easily the more desirable Forte due to its better looks and superior utility.
