Give Kia credit; it's not afraid to take on a monumental task. The ambitious Korean automaker didn't start selling cars in the United States until 1994, and a mere fifteen years later it offers a full range of vehicles, from the entry-level Rio sedan to the seven-passenger Borrego SUV to the spunky, funky Soul "urban passenger vehicle." As with almost every other carmaker, its sales are down this year (although Kia's 6.8 percent drop looks positively paltry compared with the double-digit dips suffered by most of its competitors). The faltering economy hasn't stopped Kia from forging ahead with its product plans, however. In fact, the automaker boasts that not only have there been no cutbacks, but in May, it spent more money marketing its products than during any other month in company history.
Which brings us to the all-new Forte. With the Forte, Kia has set its sights on the notoriously competitive (and profit-challenged) compact sedan segment, and it is aiming squarely at the powerhouses that currently dominate the market: the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla. That's no small task, and one at which Kia's erstwhile small sedan, the Spectra, utterly failed.
Compared with the Spectra, the Forte has a more dynamic look, with a distinct wedge-shaped profile and a wider stance. Its trunk is cavernous, with 14.7 cubic feet of cargo volume that can be further extended by lowering the split-folding rear seats. The cabin is nicely appointed, with cloth or leather seats, a user-friendly center stack, steering-wheel-mounted controls, standard Sirius radio, and Bluetooth.
The Forte is available in three trim levels: LX, EX, and SX. The LX and the EX are equipped with a 156-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder mated to a standard five-speed manual transmission, with an optional four-speed automatic. The sportier SX comes with a 173-hp, 2.4-liter four with either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic. A Fuel Economy Package, which improves EPA estimated fuel mileage from 25/34 mpg to 27/36 mpg (city/highway), is available on the EX.
We drove an EX with the lively 2.0-liter, but the four-speed automatic to which it is mated longs for another gear - hammering the pedal for passing maneuvers resulted in timely but abrupt downshifts that were accompanied by too much engine noise. The sportier SX had an even more satisfying amount of power, but the six-speed manual took some getting used to, due to its overly sensitive clutch takeup and vague shift action. Although the Forte's performance isn't exactly ground-breaking, its speed-sensitive steering is accurate and progressive, its four-wheel disc brakes are up to the job, and its suspension, which was tuned in the U.S. for American road conditions, absorbs bumps well without unsettling the ride.
The Forte is unlikely to dethrone either the Civic or the Corolla - or for that matter the Mazda 3 - but Kia now has a bona fide competitor to all of them.

With the news that an American version of "Top Gear" is making steady progress and has released a trailer, we couldn't help but draw comparisons between the two shows. Which one will you watch?

Though not exactly a bombshell of an announcement, Top Gear, the BBC2 show about all things automotive, has selected a Kia Cee'd as its newest reasonably priced track car.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has recently bestowed the 2010 Kia Forte its coveted “Top Safety Pick” award, making it the third Kia vehicle to receive one of the nonprofit organization’s highest recommendations. The other two vehicles include the Kia Soul crossover and the Kia Sedona minivan.

I'm impressed with the Kia Forte SX. The interior is well-designed, and the materials are generally quite nice for a compact car, although there are still few remnants of the really cheap plastics that Korean cars have become synonymous with. I was surprised to learn that the sound system isn't an optional upgraded unit, because it sounds so good and offers features like iPod integration and satellite radio.

As the former owner of a Kia Spectra, the Forte's predecessor, I'm slightly disappointed that the Forte didn't leave a stronger impression on me. Sure, it's a lot better than the Spectra, but I was kinda rooting for Kia to directly hit the Civic/Corolla target. Instead, the Forte comes up a bit short -- closer than the Spectra, but still short.

The Forte is a well-executed compact sedan that will, as my colleagues have noted, have a difficult time making inroads against the 500-pound gorillas of this category, the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla. But it's so much better than the Spectra it replaces, and it's really well equipped for the money. Although it has none of the bottom-of-the-barrel aura that plagued the Spectra, it also has little of the cachet of its sibling, the cheeky little Soul wagon.

In terms of packaging, styling, features, and quality, Kia has a competitor in the Forte. While the styling looks like it was driven off a Honda dealer lot, there's nothing here that looks distinctly Korean or pointedly cheap. That's a huge start toward dispelling preconceptions. Good things continue inside too. The center stack and instrument panel are sporty and easy to use. There are also upscale offerings like heated seats, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and iPod integration. With the Forte, Kia should see plenty of new shoppers in its showrooms.

Count me in with the reasonably impressed crowd. The Forte is a bit rough around the edges, but offers a whole lot of value and feature content for a very reasonable price.

I'm surprised no one besides Eric Tingwall mentioned this car's abysmal ride quality. It crashes over bumps; it feels like there's no damping at all. The 45-series tires no doubt aren't helping here, but even so...

Summary
Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
Consequences
Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.
