Jeep Wrangler Stitch Concept Side View1
Here's the thing about Jeep's yearly parade of "Moab Concept" vehicles: they're actually running, functional vehicles, and they always head straight to Utah after their unveiling for some good old-fashioned off-road fun. Those rock-crawling hijinks are the subject of today's Feature Flick.

It was an eleventh-hour hail mary: with just days to go until the 2012 presidential election, the campaign for former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney released an advertisement claiming that Jeep was moving all of its production to China. Unfortunately for Romney, the claim was debunked and the ad was later hailed as “the lie of the year.” Just eight weeks after the election was called for President Barack Obama, Jeep announced that it set an all-time global sales record. Sitting in his office inside the Jeep stand at the Detroit Auto Show, Jeep CEO Mike Manley brushed off the whole situation with a chuckle and some characteristic British sensibility: “yes, we’re doing quite well,” he said.

We already knew that Jeep was planning a diesel-version of its successful Grand Cherokee for the 2013 model year, but a new report says we'll have our first look at the oil-burning SUV at January's Detroit auto show. Jeep CEO Mike Manley spoke to WardsAuto and Manley expects drivers to be "impressed with the SUV’s driving dynamics and reduced noise, vibration and harshness." It's expected that the U.S.-spec diesel will be the same 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 offered in Europe; in the European Grand Cherokee, the V-6 produces 237 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque while returning the equivalent of 28 combined mpg. Chrysler has already added 1100 jobs at its Jefferson North plant in Michigan to build the new model. Manley sees the addition of a diesel option to the Grand Cherokee as a good move for the brand: "I see that growth continuing. As people realize that diesel not only offers great fuel economy but also good driving dynamics in a clean way, I see that part of the segment continue to grow." Although, Fiat-Chrysler CEO had previously confirmed that the oil-burning Grand Cherokee would join the lineup for the 2013 model year, we have to wonder if its Detroit debut will also coincide with the car's 2014 facelift. We couldn't reach Jeep for comment, but have previously spotted a 2014 Grand Cherokee testing essentially camouflage-free. Expect LED head- and taillights, a ZF-sourced eight-speed, and Chrysler's 8.4-inch touchscreen to make their way to Jeep's best seller. Whether or not the 2014 facelift appears with the diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee, Wards says to expect the new engine to start showing up in dealerships by the end of the first quarter of next year. Chrysler announced its November sales this morning, marking a 14-percent boost over the same month last year, the 32nd month that the company had year-over-year sales gains. November 2012 sales totaled 122,565 units. Compared with 2011, year-to-date sales are also up 22 percent to 1,499,420 vehicles sold in the first 11 months of 2012.
2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Front Three Quarters View
Jeep’s current Grand Cherokee has only been on the market since late 2010, but we’ve seen its design for quite a while – after all, it was first shown at the New York Auto Show in 2009. If its looks seem a little long in the tooth, you’ll be happy to know Jeep agrees, and is readying a facelift for the 2014 Grand Cherokee. Jeep has yet to officially show off its revamped SUV, but our spy photographer recently caught a couple prototypes completely devoid of camouflage. Up front, the Grand Cherokee receives an all-new front fascia, which boasts a new implementation of the Jeep seven-bar grille graphic. Previously, the grille surround ended at the inner corners of the headlamps, but it now continues to the outer edges of the fascia before wrapping up into the headlamps. Expect that surround to vary between different trim grades – as shown here, the 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited appears to use a body-color surround, while the surround on the 2014 Grand Cherokee Laredo prototype is painted a contrasting argent color. Speaking of headlamps, these new units appear slightly narrower than before, boasting a cut-away edge and lighting pattern that reminds us of the Chrysler 300.  Fog lamps are also revised: the current Grand Cherokee uses round fog lamps placed within trapezoidal openings sunk into the front bumper. The new Grand Cherokee seems to use trapezoidal fog lamps, which flare from the bumper surface and are flanked with chrome bezels. The lower air intake is also restyled to provide a smoother look, and is home to tow hooks on four-wheel-drive Grand Cherokees. Jeep’s designers didn’t mess with much at the Grand Cherokee’s tail, but a few small revisions help tidy the SUV’s appearance. Designers deleted the trim panel that previously spanned the width of the tailgate, and also revised the Grand Cherokee’s taillamps. The taillamps' lens pattern forms a ring that neatly echoes the headlamps’ shape. We’ve yet to see any photos of interior revisions, but expect them to be mild – we wouldn’t be surprised to find new trim materials or interior colors, along with the latest iteration of Chrysler’s 8.4-inch UConnect touchscreen infotainment system. Although there is some rumbling of a smaller, 3.2-liter version of the present 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 being added to the Grand Cherokee’s portfolio, expect the biggest mechanical revision to be the advent of the ZF-licensed eight-speed automatic transmission. A 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 will still be offered as an option, and the 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 will remain an exclusive to the SRT8 model. Jeep executives have previously confirmed a diesel-powered Grand Cherokee will be sold in North America, but its timing remains a bit unclear. Look for the new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee to make its public debut early next year, perhaps at either the Detroit or Chicago auto show.
