2015 Jaguar XJ Series
2015 Jaguar XJ Series

New for 2015

The Jaguar XJ remains largely unchanged for the 2015 model year, with minor changes to options and package pricing.

Vehicle Overview

The Jaguar XJ is a full-size luxury sedan that comes in standard and long-wheelbase versions, which competes with the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes Benz S-Class, and Audi A8. The XJ comes in a variety of forms, from the base XJ with a supercharged V-6 to the high-performance XJR that gets a 550-hp supercharged V-8. The XJ fits above the XF as the largest sedan available in the Jaguar lineup.

Summary

The 2015 Jaguar XJ is a vehicle of many choices: standard or long wheelbase, supercharged V-6 or V-8, and on V-6 models, rear- or all-wheel drive. Despite offering so many build options, all XJs use an exceptionally tuned ZF eight-speed automatic. The standard supercharged V-6 displaces 3.0-liters, makes 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, and is rated by the EPA for 18/27 mpg (city/highway) when driving the rear wheels, 16/24 mpg driving all four, and 17/27 mpg in the long-wheelbase version. Two different levels of the supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 are available, starting with a 470 hp version in the “Supercharged” models that twists out 424 lb-ft of torque. Stepping up to the XJR nets buyers 550 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque. EPA estimates are 15/23 mpg, which is back-of-the-pack thirsty, even in the luxury sedan crowd.
The 2015 XJ comes ready to pamper the driver and passengers. Some available features include adaptive HID headlights, a dual-glass panoramic sunroof, a premium rear seat package (dual individually reclining rear seats with memory, power sunblinds, dual 10.2-inch rear LCD screens, and rear media interface), heated 14-way adjustable front seats (with a massage function that has 5 modes and five intensity levels), virtual instrument cluster, available AWD (V-6 models), engine stop/start technology, adaptive cruise control, a blind spot warning, and a 1,300-watt Meridian Reference premium sound system.
The 2015 Jaguar XJ has not been crash tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS.

What We Think

The 2015 Jaguar XJ is a versatile big touring sedan that doesn’t get the credit it deserves for driving as good as it does, especially when the sheer size of the sedan is considered. In an Editor’s Notebook Review of a 2013 Jaguar XJ we noted, “BMW has the reputation of being the ultimate driver's brand, but, dynamically speaking, Jag has the Bavarians in its rearview mirror and it's been that way for years. The XJ and XF are absolutely phenomenal behind the wheel, no matter the engine choice, which, incidentally, ranges from awesome to amazing. The powertrain and chassis are so perfectly matched, you wonder why there are so few Jags on the road.”
We loved the luxurious interior, and the excellent driving dynamic that made the XJ feel light on its feet and ready to pounce, but we couldn’t get over the infotainment system. It’s been bad for years, and hasn’t gotten better. Even basic systems are buried, confusingly, several screens into the system, which also uses much-too-small touch points. The system is decent to use when parked, but distracting while driving. In a Driven Review of a 2014 Jaguar XJR we said, “The 550-hp engine pushes the R to the most aggressive end of the XJ spectrum, but this careful execution of the big Jag commendably doesn't try to push things too far. The XJR feels very much at home in the XJ family, with its good manners fully intact.” We often found that the supercharged V-8 (in any form) resulted in unnoticed jaunts to speeds that far exceeded the posted speed limit.

Enthusiasts might love useful wagons, sporty coupes, open-air convertibles, and capable off-roaders, but sedans are still the go-to choice for buyers in the U.S. Make no mistake though, not all four-doors are doomed to grocery toting and commuting. Some sedans beg for more. Some sedans have an appetite for asphalt and a mean streak to boot. These top ten most powerful sedans you can buy here in the States can do it all, from laying down hot laps at the track to picking up the kids from school. Dive in and you'll see the ten most powerful four doors in their standard condition--that means no special tunings or performance packages that are added on at a premium.
