New For 2014

The only change for the 2014 Infiniti Q70 is the addition of an engine cooler to Sport Package models equipped with the V-6.

Vehicle Summary

Previously known as the Infiniti M, the 2014 Infiniti Q70 is a midsize sport luxury sedan. The M30 -- in coupe and convertible forms -- was one of Infiniti's original models when the brand debuted in the U.S. in 1989, but it only lasted until 1992 due to lackluster sales. The nameplate was revived in 2002 with the strangely styled M45 that was based on the Japanese-market Nissan Gloria. That car was powered by a 4.5-liter V-8 engine shared with the larger Q45 and was a bit of an odd duck sizewise, too: it was larger than competitors such as the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class but not as big as full-size flagships like the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The M was redesigned for the 2006 model year to compete more directly with the midsize luxury class and offered a choice of a 3.5-liter V-6 or the same 4.5-liter V-8. The M's 2010 redesign was an evolution of the third-generation model but featured more distinctive styling inspired by the 2009 Infiniti Essence concept car. This fourth-generation M was available in rear- and all-wheel drive M37 and M56 models powered by a 3.7-liter V-6 and a 5.6-liter V-8, respectively, with an M35h hybrid introduced in 2012. Other than the name, the 2014 Q70 is essentially unchanged from the 2013 M.

The 2014 Infiniti Q70 is one of our favorite cars in the midsize luxury sport sedan class. Its engines impress with their power -- in fact, we think the 3.7-liter, 330-hp V-6 is plenty of motor, making us wonder if the monstrously powerful, 420-hp, 5.6-liter V-8 is necessary at all -- and the rear-wheel-drive chassis provides athletic responses and handling. The hybrid model splits the difference between the V-6 and the V-8 in terms of power, although in our experience the hybrid system's refinement and smoothness is inconsistent.

There is a sport package available on V-6 and V-8 models that includes technology like an active steering system and rear-wheel steering. The sport steering setup feels unnatural compared with the traditional setup, and the sport model's suspension is pretty stiff -- the standard setup for its more compliant ride, and it might be a better choice if you often drive on uneven roads. Both V-6 and V-8 models are also available with all-wheel drive.

Another plus for the 2014 Infiniti Q70 is its styling. The exterior's flowing lines still look handsome even a few years into this generation's model cycle, and the interior is sumptuous, with plush materials and easy-to-use controls relative to complex infotainment systems found in competitors. The rear seat is a bit cramped, though.

You'll like:

  • Well-trimmed interior
  • Sporty driving feel
  • Powerful engines all around

You won't like:

  • Tight rear seat
  • Intrusive electronic nannies
  • Stiff ride with sport package

2014 Infiniti Q70 IIHS During Testing
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's stringent small front overlap crash test continues to flummox automakers. Three large luxury sedans—the Infiniti Q70, the BMW 5-Series, and the Lincoln MKS—are the latest to go under the IIHS microscope. While the Q70 managed to emerge with a Top Safety Pick+ rating, the BMW 5-Series and Lincoln MKS performed the worst of all seven large luxury cars the IIHS has tested for the 2014 rating cycle.
2014 Infiniti Q70 Front Three Quarters
The biggest change for the 2014 Infiniti Q70 will be its name. Formerly known as the Infiniti M (M37, M35h, and M56), the new Q70 will cost $800 more than the base Infiniti M37 cost in 2013. Positioned above the compact Q50 luxury sport sedan and Q60 coupe, the mid-size 2014 Infiniti Q70 adds a few minor enhancements to its tech-loaded luxury package.
2014 Infiniti Q50 Rear Left View
Infiniti didn’t have any big debuts at the 2013 New York auto show, but the automaker has been making headlines thanks to new hires and future products. In the latest episode of Wide Open Throttle, Infiniti CEO Johan De Nysschen meets with a few editors from Motor Trend to discuss the many changes the company is about to undergo.
