New For 2013

The G25 will be sold through December 2012, when it will be discontinued. The base G37 coupe, the Sport Appearance Edition G37 sedan, and the Limited Edition G37 sedan are no longer available. Silk obi aluminum interior trim on some models replaces the previous shodo aluminum trim.

The Infiniti G is a luxury sports car that emphasizes the latter. Maybe that’s why, for 2013, Infiniti is dropping the smaller-displacement G25 from its lineup and adding another Infiniti Performance Line (IPL) vehicle, the 343-hp IPL G convertible. Like the already available IPL G coupe, the convertible is set apart from regular G37 droptops by nineteen-inch graphite-finished aluminum wheels; sportier brakes, suspension, and exhaust; and a unique front fascia and side sills. Even though the IPL looks great, the convertible is probably our least favorite of the G37 body styles. The retractable hard top can squeak and creak on all but the smoothest roads, and when lowered, it effectively takes up all the trunk space. If cargo capacity is a must, the G37 also comes as a coupe and a sedan. Both are available with a seven-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual, if you opt for a Sport 6MT model. Those models come with sport brakes, sport-tuned suspensions, and power sunroofs, as well as a slew of technological gadgetry including navigation and rear parking assist. The Sport 6MT model is available for the G37 convertible, too. It’s the priciest G37 trim level for any body style, next to the IPLs, that is. An IPL G coupe with a six-speed manual costs $5600 more than a G37 coupe Sport 6MT.

Front, side, and side curtain air bags; ABS; traction and stability control; and a tire-pressure monitoring system are standard. The convertible’s rear seat has fixed head restraints with pop-up roll bars.

You'll like:

  • Fun to drive
  • Rear- or all-wheel drive

You won't like:

  • V-6 engine is coarse
  • Convertible has almost no trunk space with top down

2013 Infiniti G37 Front Three Quarters 3
Two weeks ago, we reported that the Infiniti G37 sports sedan would be sold alongside the all-new 2014 Infiniti Q50 to occupy the lower end of the entry-level luxury market. Now, Infiniti has announced pricing for the 2014 Infiniti G37, and it’s a big drop from the car’s 2013 starting price which was actually slightly higher than that of the Q50. Infiniti is also saying that the G37 will stick around through the 2015 model year, surprising considering that the car was introduced for the 2007 model year as has only seen minimal changes since then.

If Infiniti's new naming convention for 2014 still has you scratching your head, don't worry, you're not alone. But regardless of what the models are called, some are coming up for a redesign, most notably the replacement for the G37 sedan, which will be henceforth called the Q50. But don't let the numeric designation deceive you. Unlike current models, the number has no correlation to engine displacement. So don't get overly-excited at the prospect of a V-8-powered midsizer.

A wholly re-imagined corporate naming scheme means that Infiniti's next entry sports sedan will be called the Q50, ending the reign of the G25/35/37 designation that has heretofore marked Infiniti's BMW 3 Series fighter. But is the new name an opportunity for Infiniti to reinvent its reputation, or a mistake that will confuse car shoppers?

You could boil down the upgrades the Infiniti Performance Line gives to the G37 into three areas: the exterior design, the engine, and the suspension. Unfortunately, I'm not necessarily sure the hopped-up G37 excells in any of them.

2014 Infiniti G Right Front Spy Shots 2
A camouflaged Infiniti G sedan was recently spotted testing in Germany near the Nürburgring. Although the car was covered in heavy camouflage, some of the brand’s design characteristics give away the car’s identity. The new Infiniti G sedan appears to have grown a bit compared to the current model.
