2011 Infiniti IPL G Coupe Front Three Quarters
Infiniti's current advertising spots begin with a Shodo brush stroke of a car silhouette, the designer's first representation of how a new car will look. With the IPL -- Infiniti Performance Line -- the brand puts figurative pen to paper and begins to sketch out a new, high-performance sub-brand. In creating the IPL, Infiniti is following well-established practice in the luxury-car arena. All of its major rivals already have a family of extra-sporty variants: M for BMW, AMG for Mercedes-Benz, S and RS for Audi, the V-series for Cadillac, and the nascent F models for Lexus. Given its comparatively small global sales footprint, however, Infiniti is starting small -- as a package, the IPL G Coupe is a considerably more modest effort than any of those specialty machines.

The IPL debuts as a single model, the G37 coupe. It's based on the G37 Coupe Sport 6MT, which already comes with the premium and navigation packages. The IPL treatment starts in the engine room, where engineers were able to coax a bit more out of the already high-achieving 3.7-liter V-6. Horsepower increases from 330 at 7000 rpm to 348 at 7400 rpm, while torque is bumped up to 276 pound-feet from 270. A less restrictive exhaust system is fitted, which Infiniti claims makes the engine freer-revving at high rpm. Buyers choose a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic with shift paddles.
Given some stick, the 3.7-liter roars to life, flinging the coupe down the road. Despite the retuned exhaust, this isn't the most mellifluous six, but it's hardly offensive. The six-speed manual has short throws and a satisfying mechanical heft that's matched by the effort of the clutch. The seven-speed automatic operates with flawless logic (holding gears indefinitely if the lever is first moved into manual mode, returning to Drive after a few moments if it's not).
The suspension is stiffened, by twenty percent up front and ten percent at the rear, compared to the base car. The brakes, 14.0-inch vented front discs squeezed by four-piston aluminum calipers and 13.8-inch vented rear discs with two-piston aluminum calipers, are from the sport package; so too is the limited-slip differential.
The wide, summer tires (Bridgestone Potenzas, size 225/45R19 up front, 245/40R19 at the rear) provide plenty of grip, and the firm suspension shrugs off the most tightly coiled canyon road yet still takes the edge off sharp bumps. The quicker-ratio steering -- again from the sport package -- is pleasantly weighted and the deep bucket seats, with adjustable lateral bolsters in the cushion and the seatback, do a great job holding you in place.

The thing is, all that can be said of the regular G37 Sport as well. The real impact of the IPL, then, is visual. The IPL coupe's lower body is ringed with aggressive aerodynamic bits: a redesigned lower fascia, deep side skirts, and a unique lower rear bumper and a rear spoiler. Seven-spoke nineteen-inch wheels get a dark gray finish, while polished dual exhaust tips and a unique engine cover provide an extra bit of eye candy. Inside, there's red stitching for the gray leather interior or a vibrant red interior that is IPL exclusive.
The IPL would be more special if the G37 Sport weren't already so aggressive. But that car's firm suspension, hefty steering, firm clutch, meaty short-throw shifter, and strong V-6 already make the G37 one of the sportiest car in its segment. The IPL might not take things a whole lot further, but it isn't commanding a five-figure premium either. At $48,825, the six-speed coupe is $5550 over a G37 Coupe Sport 6MT. The automatic is another $1900.
This car, though, is just the initial effort. Next will come a convertible (likely with the same modifications) and then, probably, an IPL based on the M56 and the FX50. Infiniti is only starting the sketch. It will be a while before the picture of the Infiniti Performance Line is complete.

2012 Cadillac CTS Sedan Rear Three Quarter
2011-2012 Infiniti G37 Coupe, Nissan 370Z The Problem: A programming error in the power window switch controller causes the auto-reverse feature to not work, and could result in a “pinch injury.” If a body part gets trapped in a closing window, the switch controller might not act fast enough. The Fix: Dealers will replace the power switches for free, and owners will start being notified on November 28, 2011. Nissan can also be contacted at 1-800-647-7261,and Infiniti at 1-800-662-6200. Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 1788 units of certain 2011 and 2012 model year Infiniti G37 Coupes and certain 2011 Nissan 370Zs manufactured between July 2, 2011 through August 29, 2011. 2012 Cadillac CTS The Problem: A nut that was not properly torqued could loosen and cause the push rod to separate from the brake pedal. The Fix: Dealers will inspect affected vehicles, and if necessary, properly torque the nut free of charge.  GM has already begun notifying owners, but Cadillac can also be reached at 1-800-458-8006. Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 674 units manufactured between October 21, 2011 and October 26, 2011. Source: NHTSA
2011 Nissan Altima 01
September was similar to June, July, and August 2011 for Japanese automakers, with Nissan again increasing sales, and Toyota and Honda still struggling to keep up. Though production for  returning to normal in September, for the first time since the Japan earthquake and tsunami in March, it appears that getting back to pre-earthquake sales performance may still take some time.
2013 Infiniti G37 IPL Convertible Concept Front Three Quarters View
Seeing as Infiniti used last year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance to roll out its performance-focused branding and the new 2011 G37 IPL Coupe, perhaps it’s fitting  that the company chose this year’s show to announce an IPL-tuned convertible will officially join the lineup for the 2013 model year.
Red Bull Infiniti F1 Front Three Quarters
Infiniti's partnership with Red Bull Racing was long rumored to extend past simply an F1 sponsorship Many suggested the automaker could help engineer advanced systems for the team, but in actuality, it appears the inverse may be true. Autocar suggests Red Bull may well be helping give future Infiniti sport models -- erm, wings.

If you get behind the wheel of an Infiniti G37 IPL coupe expecting the sort of transformation that takes place between a BMW 335i and M3, you'll be severely disappointed. Infiniti is targeting the BMW 335is with its first IPL offering and thus keeping the price premium for the IPL badge pretty minimal. It's a good thing that the price increase is minimal because the performance increase is minimal, too. I don't think I would have guessed I was driving an IPL instead of a regular G37 coupe if I didn't know before I got behind the wheel. Perhaps a few laps on a road course would help demonstrate the IPL package's 18 extra hp and 6 additional lb-ft of torque, but the difference is negligible on a commute.

The Infiniti G37 has always been, in essence, the best BMW 3-series money can buy, with the possible exception of a BMW 3-series. The IPL version tows the same line, only its target is the $51,100 335is. Like the sporty version the 3-series coupe, the IPL package includes a substantial, if not mind-blowing power gain (18 hp, versus 20 hp in the 335is), and a slightly more sporty suspension (unique to the IPL for Infiniti, shared with an option package on the regular 335i for BMW).

No, this isn't a wild, hairy beast; the Jekyll to the G37S's Hyde. But overall, the IPL-spec G37 coupe is a subtle, substantial improvement over an everyday two-door G.
