2012 Infiniti FX35 Review
2012 Infiniti FX35 Review

Once upon a time, SUVs were truck based and looked much like their ancestors. With the advent of the luxury SUV, things changed quite a bit. The 2012 Infiniti FX35 is certainly a big part of that change. While undoubtedly attractive and sporty enough to get plenty of attention, it does sacrifice practicality to performance and body design. It has the look and feel of Infiniti’s luxury sedans. In the cabin, it would be easy to mistake one’s surroundings for the country club or a proper English library with all of the soft leather and beautiful wood accents. The FX35 is a good choice for someone looking for a bit more space than a sedan with a high performance powertrain.

New For 2012

For the 2012 model year, Infiniti left the FX35 largely unchanged. There are a few minor changes to report however:

  • Various revised standard features.
  • Upgraded gauge lighting.
  • Redesigned grille and fascia.
  • The new Limited Edition trim level, much like the Infiniti FX35 with all-wheel drive.

The 2012 Infiniti FX35 is a fully loaded crossover luxury SUV. This model is available in three trim levels, the FX35, the FX35 Limited Edition, and the FX50. The base models are equipped with 18-alloy wheels, while in the FX35 Limited Edition trim level, the wheels are 21 inches and feature upgraded exterior paint and some other features not standard on the other models. In many ways the FX35 looks more like a luxury sedan than a SUV. The front end and grille are wide and assertive looking with a rectangular grille and the Infiniti emblem in the center of the grille. The headlights are smallish and sit back far into the front fender areas. The overall body style is more about curves with a few lines in the metal work than the modern lines many luxury SUV models have.

Interior & Cargo

Inside the cabin of the 2012 Infiniti FX35 comfort is the name of the game. This vehicle is equipped with supportive, comfortable seats. Passengers in the front of the cabin will find there is no shortage of head and leg room. For those in the back it’s a different matter. Taller passenger will find the close quarters a challenge. Most SUVs of this class have more space for passengers. The same applies for the available cargo space in the FX35. With the rear seats in their normal position, this model has 25 cubic feet. The cargo space increases to 62 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded down.

The limited interior space aside, this SUV is all about luxury through and through. The interior is full of wood, supple leather, and all kinds of high quality, soft materials through the cabin. Plenty of technology was added to the FX35 as well. The audio and navigation systems are top notch. At first, they may be awkward, but once the driver acclimates to the systems, they are easy and intuitive, adding a great deal to the driving experience.

As with any SUV, safety is a high priority for the Infiniti FX35. This luxury SUV is equipped with front seat side mounted airbags as well as full length side curtain airbags. Stability and traction control is added for help on winding roads and with the potential of rollover. Of course, anti-lock brakes are part of the standard safety equipment on any trim level.

In terms of optional safety features, the FX35 can be equipped with adaptive cruise control and a lane departure warning and prevention system. Intuitive brake assist is another option on this model. The FX35 scored well in independent and government crash testing as well.

Driving Experience

With such a sporty exterior it only makes sense the 2012 Infiniti FX35 would be equipped with a significantly powerful powertrain. It is equipped with a 3.5-liter, V-6 engine coupled with a seven-speed automatic transmission complete with manual shift control as the only option. This powertrain produces 303 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is estimated at 16/21 mpg city/highway.

On the FX50 model, Infiniti put in a 5.0-liter, V-8 motor paired with the same gearbox as the base FX35 model. The larger powertrain offers up 390 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The fuel usage for this model is less efficient than models with the smaller powertrain. It is estimated at 14/20 mpg city/highway.

Behind the wheel of the 2012 Infiniti FX35 drivers are sure to notice the similarities between the two powertrains. Both offer impressive acceleration, tight steering, and an uncanny ability to take curvy terrains, such as mountains with ease. The brakes are strong and dependable. There is also no doubt as to the quality of the seven-speed transmission. It shifts easily and confidently.
