2012 hyundai elantra Reviews and News

2012 Hyundai Elantra
2012 Hyundai Elantra
The Elantra plays in a tough category that is traditionally dominated by the likes of the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla and has recently been joined by top-notch new models such as the Ford Focus and the Chevrolet Cruze. For 2011, Hyundai unleashed an entirely new Elantra sedan that is more than ready to take on the best in its class. In fact, every Elantra sedan, no matter the trim level or specification, receives an impressive 40-mpg highway rating thanks to a new 148-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, light weight, slick aerodynamics, and just plain smart engineering. The sedan is available with fancy features such as heated front and rear seats, navigation, and a backup camera. Its styling is distinctive, but ride quality is merely OK, and excess engine and suspension noise sometimes invade the otherwise pleasant cabin. The truly excellent Elantra Touring station wagon continues largely unchanged for 2012, even though the next-generation Elantra hatchback recently debuted for the European market. If you have too much stuff to fit into a small sedan but not enough space to park a typical mid-size car, then the Touring might be the perfect vehicle for you. It drives well, too, and not merely by station-wagon standards. Six air bags, antilock brakes, power windows and locks, tilt steering, an iPod-friendly stereo, and keyless entry are standard on all Elantras. Options such as heated leather seats and a power sunroof appear across the lineup. A lengthy warranty helps seal the deal in the fight for thrifty buyers' cash.

Many automakers are probably indulging in a bit of private schadenfreude following Hyundai/Kia's public mea culpa for inflated fuel economy figures that the company blames on a procedural error during testing. But one brand in particular may stand to gain the most from Hyundai's misfortune. According to a report from Bloomberg, Honda is best-positioned to gain from Hyundai's loss, with a recently-refreshed model lineup with multiple models that match or surpass the fuel economy from Hyundai's equivalent models following the revision.

California owners of the Hyundai Elantra sedan are looking for some retribution – they feel as though the automaker misled them by advertising that the compact sedan achieves 40 mpg. The Hyundai Elantra is rated at 40 mpg, but as any glance at the window sticker would tell you, that figure applies only to the EPA’s highway test cycle. The car is rated at 29 mpg in the city and 33 mpg city/highway combined. According to Reuters, the lawsuit being filed by public interest group Consumer Watchdog against Hyundai states that the manufacturer's advertisements led buyers to believe that they would be paying less in fuel because of the car's high mpg rating. The plaintiffs in the class-action suit claim that the automaker is in violation of California's consumer protection and fraud laws – they state that the text explaining the 40-mpg rating is in "tiny, faint text." Hyundai told Reuters that the stated mileage is realistic. When we asked Hyundai if they had any comment on the suit, they told us that it "believes this case has no merit, as our advertising is accurate and in full compliance with applicable laws and regulations.  In fact, we’ve reviewed our ads and think Consumer Watchdog and their client are dead wrong." Never mind the fact that the Monroney, placed in the window of every new Elantra sold, clearly gives EPA ratings for both city and highway cycles. Again, the Elantra – like many other new cars in its class – only returns that 40 figure on the freeway. This isn't the first time buyers have gone after manufacturers for overstating fuel economy ratings – earlier this year, a judge reversed a court decision stating that Honda had misled customers on the fuel efficiency of the Civic Hybrid. Hyundai has been in accordance with laws regarding information disclosure, and the 40-mpg rating for the Elantra sedan was set by the Environmental Protection Agency in its evaluation testing. Hyundai's European arm is considering building higher performance versions of the i40 sedan and the i30 hatchback. Tweaked versions of cars are sold in the U.S. as the Sonata and Elantra GT, respectively, potentially opening the door to hotter Hyundais on our shores.

Despite there not being a huge number of product reveals at this year's Chicago Auto Show, there was still plenty of interesting metal on the floor. Here are my favorites.
