2015 Honda Pilot
2015 Honda Pilot

New for 2015

The Honda Pilot remains largely unchanged for the 2015 model year, but adds an EX special edition that boasts unique 18-inch wheels, a rear entertainment system, satellite radio, and a sunroof.

Vehicle Overview

The Pilot is an eight-passenger three-row crossover that sits alongside the Odyssey in Honda’s lineup as a serious people hauler.

Summary

The 2015 Honda Pilot is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 that makes 250 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque that is connected to a five-speed automatic and can optionally drive all four wheels instead of the standard front wheels. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 18/25 mpg city/highway with FWD and 17/24 mpg with AWD. A flat folding second and third row help to make the most of the interior room, in addition to the multiple configurations that make the cargo area even more versatile. The Pilot also had four LATCH anchors, three in the second row and one in the third, allowing a four-baby carrying capacity.
The 2015 Honda Pilot earned a four-star overall rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars), and in IIHS testing received four ratings of good and one of poor for the new – and more difficult – small overlap front category; the highest possible rating is good.

What We Think

The 2015 Honda Pilot enters its final year before a new crossover arrives. The Pilot offers utility in heaps and makes the most of its boxy SUV-like shape. Most of our criticisms come in response to the design of the Pilot to deliver the most utility to the families who will be occupying them. The Honda has one of the most functional interiors in the business, but at the top trim level the plain leather looks easy to clean, but not luxurious.
Comments in a 2013 Family Crossover comparison praised the quick fold-down time of both rear rows of seats (13.7 seconds) but also noted that, “You wouldn't want to take the Pilot on a road trip … It's made only for trips to and from the soccer field." The Pilot triumphed against a 2013 Ford Explorer, but was knocked out by the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder. We said, “The 2013 Honda Pilot is functional, straightforward, and as boring to drive as it is to look at. The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder is functional, too, but it leans toward passenger comfort rather than all-around utility.”
