2014 Honda Pilot

New For 2014

The 2014 Honda Pilot stands pat. A significant redesign is planned for 2015.

Vehicle Summary

The 2014 Honda Pilot is one of the best-selling and most well rounded large crossovers in the market. As such, it is crucial to Honda's strategy in the United States. Honda knows the crossover segment is crowded and competitive, and yet the Pilot has received only minor changes in recent years. The last major redesign was for 2009, although Honda did some fine-tuning for the 2012 and '13 model years, freshening the appearance inside and out and adding more standard equipment. A thorough redesign of the Pilot is on tap for 2015.

Overview

The 2014 Honda Pilot is a big, blocky, eight-seat crossover. At least, that's what Honda calls it, even though in size and driving behavior it is more comparable to a large SUV than a crossover. There is one engine, a 250-hp, 253-lb-ft V-6 that is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. The V-6 is just adequate, and the transmission is a gear behind most competitors. Four-wheel drive is an option, and the Pilot can tow up to 4500 pounds.

The 2014 Honda Pilot is a well-executed vehicle, but it doesn't break any new ground. Honda's reputation for quality and reliability makes the Pilot a safe choice, but don't expect an elevated driving experience. What it does have going for it is a large amount of space, including 18 cubic feet behind the third row of seats and 87 cubic feet of total cargo storage. Last year, the Pilot was made more appealing for tech-savvy consumers when Honda added Bluetooth audio and hands-free connectivity, automatic climate controls, a rear camera, eight-inch information display, and USB integration.

While we like the Pilot, the fact that it doesn't have any truly standout features makes it vulnerable to competitors. Luckily, a redesign is scheduled for next year.
