New For 2014

The 2014 Honda CR-V carries over unchanged from the 2013 model.

Vehicle Summary

The Honda CR-V is one of the original compact SUVs. It helped define the segment and remains a strong seller for Honda, consistently winning customers with its blend of utility and fuel economy. The fourth-generation CR-V went on sale for the 2012 model year. It is an affordable entry into the crossover segment -- two-wheel-drive models start at less than $24,000.

The 2014 Honda CR-V is a fundamentally strong utility vehicle that focuses on driving character and cabin usability rather than flashy exterior design. While its styling is simple and clean, it appears more sedate than crossovers from Kia and Ford. The CR-V competes instead on its inherent dynamic goodness -- the driving position seems to fit everyone well, the suspension is taut and never allows undue harshness to ruffle the occupants, and the packaging is clever.

The 2014 Honda CR-V is sold with one engineā€”a 185-hp 2.4-liter in-line four-cylinder that is mated with a five-speed automatic transmission. The drivetrain carries over from the previous generation, although it has been tweaked to gain more power and is also more fuel-efficient. The 2014 Honda CR-V can be had with either front- or all-wheel drive.

The most significant upgrades were to the interior, which received nicer, more upmarket materials and increased storage space. More standard equipment was added -- features such as Pandora, text messaging, and a backup camera, although some of the connectivity features only work with certain kinds of mobile devices. Honda added a new all-wheel-drive system that is lighter, helps fuel efficiency, and can predict tire slip. Additionally, Honda reworked the rear-seat setup; the seats now fold flat into the floor rather than up toward the front. We prefer the new setup to the old configuration, even though there are fewer ways to adjust the seats.

Interestingly, the redesign of the CR-V is similar to the path taken by the 2012 Civic, which was largely panned and had to be refreshed a year later. The CR-V, however, has earned high marks and continues to be well received by the press and public alike.

You'll like:

  • Fold-flat seats
  • Smart all-wheel-drive system
  • Value-oriented packaging

You won't like:

The Honda CR-V took the number one spot back in the crossover sales race in September after the Toyota RAV4 overtook it in August. With 23,722 units moved off the lot, the CR-V beat the Toyota RAV4 by just under 1000 units. That leaves the Ford Escape in third place with 21,718 units sold.

Crossovers are now America's most popular type of vehicle, and 2014 is the first time that the combined crossover/SUV segment has outsold the traditional sedan.

Two Japanese crossovers dominate the top three spots in CUV sales in May, with the Honda CR-V taking the number one spot with 32,430 units sold. The Ford Escape once again assumed the second position with 31,896 units sold, while the Toyota RAV4 overtook the Chevrolet Equinox for the third spot with 23,465 units sold versus the 22,695 American CUVs sold.

It's been a tug-of-war between the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape for the top spot in 2013. And although it was a close race at times, the Japanese CUV clinched the title as the best-selling CUV in 2013, making it the second consecutive year it's been the sales king of the segment. For the first time ever, the CR-V topped 300,000 units, leaving the Escape in the dust with 295,993 units.

If the Ford Escape wants to be crowned the best-selling crossover in 2013, it has lots of catching up to do. Once again, the Ford crossover couldn't match the Honda CR-V in November. A bit lower on the compact crossover sales chart, Subaru and Kia excelled in November.
