Day 2
I wanted to take the Equinox on an excursion we have planned to northwestern Connecticut, but it's a 170-mile round trip, according to Mapquest, and after yesterday's fill-up the Equinox is showing a range of 183 miles. After some deliberation, I decide not to chance it, and we take the gas-guzzling BMW X5 instead.
It was a good decision, as it turned out. On the way home, a wreck closed the road and we were detoured far out of our way, adding at least 10 miles to the trip. If we had taken the Equinox we might very well have run out of fuel, but even if we did make it home, we almost certainly wouldn't have been left with enough to get to the nearest refueling station, which is another 15 or so miles away.
The current two refueling stations in the New York metro area will grow to six by the end of the year, with new locations opening in the Bronx, at JFK airport, in Melville and Hempstead, Long Island. But the hydrogen refueling infrastructure would need to be much further developed before a family could have a hydrogen-powered vehicle as its only car.
