I understand the whole cost component of emissions compliance, etc. But I think a lot of people are simply ignorant of modern diesels' attributes and driving characteristics. I've driven a Jetta TDI, Mercedes E320 Bluetec, and a BMW 335d, and they're all mighty impressive behind-the-wheel. I think if more people actually took the time to test-drive them, the take rate would be much higher.

This is just another classic example of a great idea, talked to death. GM throws out many millions of dollars to build a high tech diesel V8 - and now just tosses the idea? What does that say? No wonder this company is going down the drain.
The Germans make the best cars in the world and if THEY believe diesels are better than all other alternatives, than we should all have a real good look - at least!
The real reason for the abandoned diesel plans by many manufacturers in the US is the incompetent, undecided product management which constantly gives off the wrong signals.

Trying to guess what the future is going to be like is a suckers bet. U never know what kind of technologies a market will embrace or dispose of. Diesel has given us -and still has the potential- tons of belief to provide us with exponentially cheaper gas. Since retrofitting an entire sector to provide more power whether electrical, CNG, LNG, hydrogen or whatever, its never a necessity to overhaul its infrastructure; hence the diesel bubble. Now, the Germans must provide us with a diesel-powered car for the masses to win everyone over. Later the politicians will be tougher to convince
