2014 Ford Transit Connect
2014 Ford Transit Connect

New For 2014

The 2014 Ford Transit Connect is all new this year and is a considerable improvement over the outgoing Transit Connect.

Vehicle Summary

The Ford Transit Connect arrived in the U.S. for the 2010 model year, having been sold elsewhere around the world for some time. The compact, utilitarian, and affordable cargo van was aimed squarely at businesses whose fleets generally carry smaller loads and don’t need a large van like the Ford E-Series. The Transit Connect was based on the same architecture that underpinned the previous Ford Focus. When it was introduced in the States, it was available in two-, four-, and five-seat variants. It wasn't until the 2011 addition of the XLT Premium Wagon that the Transit Connect became a legitimate people hauler; that model added rear side windows and more plastic trim in the cargo area. The 2014 Ford Transit Connect and Transit Connect Wagon are all-new models with significantly improved styling, space, and equipment.

Overview

The all-new 2014 Ford Transit Connect and Transit Connect Wagon were revealed in fall 2012, but they won't go on sale until later this year. The compact vans are based on the C1 platform that underpins the new Ford Focus, and some of that common DNA can be seen in the Transit Connect Wagon's very carlike, open-mouth front grille. It can also be seen inside, where cabin materials and technologies are on par with the likes of the Focus. The standard-wheelbase Transit Connect Wagon seats five; the long-wheelbase model can fit seven occupants. Even with the long wheelbase, the 2014 Ford Transit Connect is a foot shorter overall than a Toyota Sienna minivan. Cargo space is only adequate, so many families will probably still gravitate toward traditional minivans instead. The 2014 Ford Transit Connect can tow 2000 pounds.

Transit Connect buyers can choose between a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a 1.6-liter turbo four engine, both of which are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. Ford expects the turbo engine to return more than 30 mpg on the highway, an improvement over the outgoing model's 27-mpg highway rating. The new, more powerful engines should also improve acceleration, which in the old Transit Connect was best described as "eventual." We have yet to drive the new van.

There is also a cargo-only model, which forgoes rear seats and carpeting in favor of durable hooks, tie-downs, and attachment points for shelves. It is a great choice for delivery drivers who need to carry only modest loads and must traverse congested, tight urban streets.

You'll like:

  • More carlike design
  • Roomy interior
  • Impressive interior quality

You won't like:

  • Less space than a minivan
  • Few active-safety features

2014 Ford Transit Connect Wagon Profile Passengers Side
The 2014 Ford Transit Connect cargo van returns up to 30 mpg on the highway, while the 2014 Ford Transit Connect Wagon passenger version can manage as much as 29 mpg. Both numbers are achieved when the vans are equipped with Ford's 178-hp, 1.6-liter EcoBoost turbo-four engine; front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic are standard.
2014 Ford Transit Connect Hot Wheels Edition Front Three Quarter
Ford used its press conference at the 2013 SEMA show to reveal two new one-off models. The first, based on a standard 2014 Ford Transit Connect, shows that it's not only Chevrolet who can partner with a toy manufacturer. Like the Chevrolet Camaro Hot Wheels Edition, this Ford Transit Connect was designed to match the famous children's toys. Although Hot Wheels conceived the car's design, the 2014 Ford Transit Connect was built by Ice Nine Group. A new paint job reprises the toy brand's famous blue-and-orange color scheme, while wild new wheels are designed to look like the miniature rolling stock on Hot Wheels toys. To accommodate those wheels, the van has four-inch front fender flares and six-inch rear flares; the nose has a gaping front fascia cribbed from the Ford Focus RS. Given that it's based on a Ford Transit Connect van, the Hot Wheels toy was designed to be functional. It packs tool kits, a bunk, and a tow hitch for the amateur racer who wants to tow his race car to a weekend track event. And should he (or she) get bored with real cars, the rear of the Transit Connect has a slide-out drawer with special compartments to store Hot Wheels cars. Naturally, there's also a track include in the cargo area. Although Ford will not sell a real-life version of the Transit Connect Hot Wheels edition, it will be available in toy form by next fall. Next up, KISS bassist Gene Simmons and his wife, Shannon Tweed, took the stage to reveal a custom 1956 Ford F-100 that they commissioned to raise money for a children's hospital. Tweed's hometown of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is one of only two Canadian provinces without a children's hospital. To help, Tweed started the Wheels of Dreams project to build this truck and auction it for charity. The 1956 Ford F-100, called "Snakebit," has been totally overhauled and styled to pay homage to classic Shelby muscle-car designs. A supercharged 5.4-liter V-8 engine delivers 550 hp to the 20-inch rear wheels by way of a six-speed manual transmission. "Under the word 'hot' in the dictionary, you'll find a picture of this truck," Simmons told the crowd. "Snakebit" will be auctioned by Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona, in January 2014. All the proceeds will go to building the aforementioned hospital, so Simmons told the crowd, "I'm looking for a million dollars," noting that the price was worth it because, "I touched it [the truck]."
2014 Ford Transit Connect By CGS Performance
Ford has created the portmanteau "Vandemonium" to highlight just how many modified Transit Connect cargo van and Transit Connect Wagon models it will bring to the 2013 Specialty Equipment Market Show in Las Vegas. Next month, Ford plans to show off Transit Connect vans customized by aftermarket tuners.
2014 Ford Transit Connect Taxi Profile Doors Open
Ford today revealed the details of the taxi version of its 2014 Transit Connect van. The taxi model will enter production in Valencia, Spain, and go on sale in the U.S. market next year.
Ford Wireless Braking Testing Demonstration
Today's cars are a veritable cornucopia of safety acronyms, from ABS to ESC and now LDW, among dozens of others. But most of the technologies are self-contained on the individual vehicle. Many believe the next frontier in vehicle safety will be car-to-car active safety, with vehicles able to communicate with each other to minimize hazard or injury. Ford, along with other German auto manufacturers, is testing a prototype emergency brake warning system that relies on a wireless signal transmitted from car to car.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."
Consequences
Without the correct brake reservoir label on the cap someone may add the wrong brake fluid, causing damage to the brake system seals, resulting in brake fluid leaks, lengthened stopping distances and increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Ford has notified owners. Dealers will replace the brake reservoir cap with a correct one, free of charge. The recall began on July 14, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14C06.
