New For 2013

The Transit Connect will be replaced by an all-new vehicle next year. Consequently, it receives no changes of substance for 2013.

Overview

The Transit Connect is a purpose-built vehicle aimed at small-business owners, but its appeal goes beyond that of just a commercial vehicle. Offering 130 cubic feet of cargo volume accessed by wide-opening rear doors, the Transit Connect is easy to load because of its low floor and high roof. Available as a two-seat cargo van or a four- or five-seat wagon with a fold-down second row, the Transit Connect is a versatile vehicle that can be adapted to several commercial uses. The 136-hp four-cylinder is matched to a four-speed automatic and prizes fuel economy over performance. Options include Crew Chief, an onboard device that tracks location, fuel economy, and idle time, plus vehicle diagnostics and maintenance capabilities. Although the Transit Connect is primarily used as a commercial vehicle, an XLT wagon with seating for five is available. It is a good option for people who want to haul people and yet still need the versatility and cargo capacity of a van. A limited-production Transit Connect Electric is available only to fleet customers. Look for an all-new Transit Connect next year. It will likely ride on the same platform that underpins the global Escape and Focus models. It will still use four-cylinder power, but the current engine will likely go away, to be replaced by a 1.6-liter EcoBoost and a 2.5-liter normally aspirated unit.

Safety

Front and side air bags, ABS, traction and stability control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system are standard.

We had our first look at the all-new 2014 Ford Transit Connect during Ford’s global product roll-out in September, but the automaker is now revealing more about its passenger-friendly, U.S.-spec 2014 Transit Connect Wagon.

Typically, the Paris Motor Show has little in common with commercial vehicle buyers in North America, but that may change this year. Ford is showing off a number of new products, including a new full-size Transit van and compact Transit Connect van. Both models will ultimately be added to the automaker’s North American truck lineup.

Summary
Cummings Mobility Conversion & Supply (Cummings) is recalling certain model year 2006-2014 Ford E-150, E-250, E-350, Chevrolet Express, 2006-2008 Dodge Sprinter, and 2009-2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and 2013 Ford Transit Connect vehicles manufactured January 1, 2006, to October 8, 2014, equipped with certain model S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, and S5510 wheelchair lifts manufactured by Ricon Corporation after January 1, 2006. The platform side plate of the affected wheelchair lifts may crack.
Consequences
If the platform side plates crack, the lift platform can separate from the lift and come to rest against the vehicle's lift door. When the doors are opened, the platform may fall out, increasing the risk of injury to the lift operator.
Remedy
Cummings will notify owners to take buses to a Ricon dealer or service center who will install supplemental platform support bumpers. Any platform that has already started cracking will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began January 13, 2015. Owners may contact Cumming's customer service at 1-800-639-5438 or Ricon customer service at 1-800-322-2884. Cumming's number for this recall is 14E-041.
