2012 Ford F-250 Review
2012 Ford F-250 Review

Whether you are looking for a workhorse truck or a luxury model, the 2012 Ford F-250 series has you covered. This big truck is an attractive alternative to the competition in many ways. There is no denying the well thought out and executed body style or the powerful available powertrains. This truck is available with plenty of standard features and plenty of options as well. The upgraded trim levels are equipped with the kind of standard features one would expect to find in a luxury sedan or SUV. Available in three cab configurations and four trim levels, Ford has given its fan base plenty to cheer about with this model.

New For 2012

The Ford F-250 received a complete remodel in the 2011 model year, so there are only a few changes made to the truck. Overall, it remains the same as the previous year. For 2012 the F-250 does receive:

  • 100 to 200 lb. towing increase for some models.
  • New smartphone integration function.
  • Fifth wheel-hitch availability on the 6.75 feet cargo box.

Exterior

No one can say the 2012 Ford F-250 doesn’t offer choices. This truck is available in three cab styles, two-door regular cab, the four-door super cab, and the four-door crew cab. The F-250 comes in four trim levels as well including the base XL, the XLT, the Lariat, and the luxury King Ranch. Aside from the various exterior cab configurations, the F-250 is a powerful looking truck with lots of character. The front end and grille are imposing. The vehicle sits high off the ground and the grille with its wide construction and Ford emblem in the center is a sight to see in one’s rearview mirror. There is no missing the extensive styling on the hood and front fenders either. The doors are designed with styling to match the front end and the bed and rear fenders have more than enough styling to keep the F-250 the center of attention.

Interior & Cargo

In the cabin of the 2012 Ford F-250 the trim level determines many of the truck’s finer points. In the XL and XLT models lots of hard plastic dominates the scene. In reality it is no better or worse than competing trucks in similar trim levels. With the lower trim levels you can look forward to plenty of interior storage space however. Storage can be found under the front seats and in the center console there is enough room for a laptop or hanging files if necessary.

The upper trim levels, the Lariat and the King Ranch are very different. The Lariat offers leather accents and the King Ranch is considered to be one of the most well appointed luxury trucks on the market. Technology plays a large role in the cabin of these models. The control cluster contains a large multipurpose display that gives the driver information pertaining to fuel economy, navigation, and off road information among other data.

Safety

Ford fully loaded the F-250 series up on standard safety features. All of the models are equipped with four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and hill start assist. Side curtain airbags, trailer sway control, and stability control are standard safety features as well. On the XLT and higher trim levels, the F-250 is equipped with an integrated trailer brake controller. The Lariat has power adjustable pedals and rear parking sensors. For the XLT and Lariat models, buyers can choose to add a rearview camera, while that feature is standard on the King Ranch edition. Regardless of the cab or trim level design, the F-250 is a solidly constructed truck with its size and weight available to help keep the vehicle firmly on the road or wherever it’s going.

Driving Experience

You wouldn’t expect a dainty powertrain under the hood of the 2012 F-250 and that isn’t what you are going to get. The base powertrain for this model is a 6.2-liter V-8 paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. It offers 385 hp and 4.5 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, the F-250 also comes equipped with a 6.7-liter, turbodiesel, V-8 engine also coupled with the six-speed automatic transmission. This particular powertrain is capable of 400 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque.

One of the major selling points for the 2012 Ford F-250 is its towing ability. When equipped with a conventional trailer hitch it can tow up to 14,000 lbs. By adding the available fifth wheel hitch the amount jumps up to 16,700 lbs.

Behind the wheel of the F-250 drivers are sure to notice the quiet. Compared to other trucks of its size, the F-250 offers a quiet ride and even when unloaded handles all terrains reasonably well. The steering isn’t likely to win any awards though. It is numb and less responsive than most drivers would like.
