2013 Ford Expedition

New For 2013

The XL is now available only as a fleet vehicle. New this year, the trailer brake controller is included with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package, and the Limited and King Ranch models offer dual-head-restraint DVD systems for rear passengers and optional twenty-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels. The King Ranch gets a chrome roof rack and side mirrors. There are three new paint colors.

If ever a vehicle was due for a redesign, it’s the Ford Expedition. The current-generation Expedition went on sale in 2007 and hasn’t seen many changes since. Available in three trim levels and with several different equipment packages, the Expedition can be had in regular or extended-length (EL) versions and with rear- or four-wheel drive. The EL is 14.8 inches longer than the regular Expedition and offers even more cargo-carrying capacity—up to 130.8 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded flat. The only engine option is the tried-and-true 310-hp, 5.4-liter V-8 paired with a six-speed automatic. The Expedition handles fairly well for a large SUV, thanks to its independent rear suspension, which helps to smooth out rough surfaces. Sync and satellite radio are standard, as are trailer-sway control, a capless fuel-filling system, and keyless entry. Available options include navigation, HD Radio, second-row bucket seats, power running boards, and a power moonroof. Another useful feature is MyKey, an optional programmable key system that allows parents to limit top speed and stereo volume, among other parameters, when their teenage children are driving. Full-size-SUV sales continue to lag, and the Expedition is due for a redesign, which means there should be room for negotiation if you’re in the market for Ford’s biggest SUV.

Front, side, and side curtain air bags; ABS; traction and stability control; blind-spot mirrors; programmable MyKey; tire-pressure monitoring; and a reverse sensing system are standard. The standard SOS Post-Crash Alert System sounds the horn to alert bystanders if the air bags have deployed. A rear-view camera is optional on XLT and standard elsewhere.
