2013 Ford E-150 Review
2013 Ford E-150 Review

When space and dependability are necessary, one of the first vehicles most people look for is a full-size van. In its final model year, the 2013 Ford E-150 has plenty going for it. It is available in a variety of configurations, making it a worthwhile choice for almost anyone in need of a van. It can easily do the job as a passenger van or cargo vehicle, and has optional door choices available to ensure the right function. While it is a bit sparse on the inside, the E-150 offers outfitting options sure to meet the needs of any family or organization with a strong need for heavy-duty transport. The fuel economy is naturally not going to make anyone giddy with glee, but overall the E-150 could fit the bill for anyone looking for solidly constructed and attractive full-size van.

New For 2013

The 2013 model year brings no major changes to the Ford E-150. Ford is replacing the E-150 with a new Transit design, set to be introduced to the market in January 2013.

Exterior

There is no such thing as small and dainty when it comes to any full-size van, and the 2013 Ford E-150 is no exception. There is no doubt from the moment you look at this vehicle that it means business. Available in five trim level options, the E-150 is offered as a cargo or passenger van. This means the side door is available in the 60/40-split style or the sliding door, better suited for cargo transportation. The rear door is always designed to swing out and is made to open to a full 178 degrees. The front-end and grille are assertively designed with large, square headlights and a wide grille. The grille has unique, vertical styling on the outside. Of course, Ford placed its emblem in the prominent center of the grille as well. This vehicle comes standard with 16-inch wheels and offers chrome bumpers as an option.

Interior & Cargo

Vans are made to accommodate a variety of needs. The 2013 E-150 is available for either commercial use with full seating, or cargo use with only two bucket seats in the front of the cabin. Seating configurations are extensive: it is available with bucket seats in the front and two rows of bench seats, or the second row can be equipped with captain’s chairs instead. The bench seats allow for eight passengers total, while the captain’s chair option reduces seating capacity to seven. Air-conditioning, along with several other standard features, is included on all trim levels and body styles of the E-150.

Optional features are also offered, giving buyers the ability to customize the van to suit their preferences. The E-150 can be outfitted with power locks, mirrors, and doors. It can also include a navigation system, complete with information on gas prices and traffic information regarding the vehicle’s current location. For those interested in entertainment options, the Sync system can be included to provide multimedia entertainment for the cabin.

Safety

Whether used as a passenger or cargo van, safety is always a concern. Ford thought of everything when the standard safety features were added, including the E-150’s size. This van is equipped with front side airbags, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, and an electronic stability system. Tall vehicles of this size are prone to roll issues. Thus, the electronic stability system is equipped with heavy-duty roll stability for greater comfort and control on the road. Naturally, Ford also added in some nice optional features. Buyers can chose to add a backup camera and an integrated trailer brake controller for enhanced safety.

Driving Experience

It only makes sense to offer an impressive powertrain for such a large vehicle. The 2013 Ford E-150 is equipped with a 4.6-liter, V-8 engine with the standard four-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain is capable of 225 horsepower (hp) and 286 lb-ft of torque. The fuel economy is 12/16 mpg city/highway. This van is available with a powertrain option as well. The other engine is a 5.4-liter, V-8 engine capable of 255 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. The standard transmission remains the only choice. This powertrain has a fuel economy of 13/17 mpg city/highway.

Behind the wheel of the 2013 Ford E-150, the driver has to be prepare for both the challenges and the advantages of driving such a large vehicle. Even with the traction control, stability control, and roll control, there is no denying this vehicle is a handful on the road. Of course, most drivers who choose the E-150 are already well accustomed to controlling full-size vans. The cargo, whether it is people or equipment, changes the dynamic of the van to some degree. Either way, this van does well with highway driving and meets the challenges of city driving relatively well, making it an all-around excellent option for those looking for a van that is spacious, dependable, and safe.
