Whiners and Winners - the Champ Car World Series and the Indy Racing League

INDIANAPOLIS, August 10, 2004 - The chasm in American open wheel racing appears to be widening rather than decreasing, as vapid fans of the sport were hoping would not be the case.

What's Right with the IRL

Yesterday's Michigan Indy 400 showed what is right with the Indy Racing League in particular and open-wheel racing in general. The close and furiously fast action seemed to frighten newcomers among the spectators, but third-place finisher Dan Wheldon claimed the drivers had big smiles on their faces. "The cars are on edge, but you can run flat out," he said. "Anybody who says the Indy Racing League is not the best championship in the world is a complete idiot in my book."

Nothing wrong with the F1 regulations?

So there I am, reading the latest issue of F1 Racing. Nothing wrong with the F1 regulations, opine editor Matt Bishop and star writer Peter Windsor. In a previous issue, Steve Matchett had his head in the sand as well, stating that F1 needs to stay the most high tech form of racing, doesn't need artificial rules, and so on and so forth. (Neatly forgetting that the current regulations are just as artificial as they have ever been.)
