Earlier today, Daimler announced that former Daimler executive Wolfgang Bernhard will rejoin Daimler AG to head the Mercedes-Benz Vans division.
Bernhard, 48, is a former chief operating officer at Chrysler and head of the Volkswagen brand. At Chrysler, he worked under current Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche. “I have valued his knowledge and experience since the time we spent together in the United States,” said Zetsche on his appointment of Bernhard.
Bernhard was acting as an outside adviser to Canadian supplier Magna International Inc. Bernhard’s association with Magna prompted speculation that Magna may put in a bid to acquire Chrysler. Magna was also a potential bidder for Chrysler in 2007 before Cerberus Capital Management LP acquired a commanding share from Daimler.
An interesting side note on Bernhard: he is also known for being the man perched atop the outrageous Viper-powered Dodge Tomahawk concept when it made its debut at the 2003 North American International Auto Show.
