Whiteout: BMW M Teams Up With K2 to Produce Skis

BMW's newest M product might only have the equivalent of a couple horsepower, but it has the potential to out-maneuver the mighty X6 M Sports Activity Coupe in the snow: it’s the K2 LTD BMW Design Edition downhill ski.

BMW’s M line might already have two all-wheel drive vehicles with more than 500 horsepower (the X5 M and X6 M produce 555 horsepower thanks to a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine), but the partnership with famous skimaker K2 might help BMW drivers when the roads end and the slopes begin. The skis are specially shaped with a bent front shovel section and K2’s Baseline technology, which it says improves grip on the edge of the ski.

From a design standpoint, the skis are immediately recognizable as BMW products. One version has a tire tread design on the top, while the other has the BMW badge on the front, with the iconic blue and red M color stripes running the length of the skis. If only they boasted flame surfacing and iDrive controller knobs.

Want a pair of the skis to, say, put on top of your 335i xDrive? Well, you’re going to have to work for them. The skis aren’t available for purchase, but are instead offered as a prize for participants in the BMW xDrive Cup. The cup is an informal competition that is taking place all across ski resorts in Europe.

Skiers can check in to certain venues and get virtual badges for skiing down certain slopes, completing slaloms, or participating in an online scavenger hunt. Anyone who gets five or more badges is automatically entered to win one of 500 limited-edition ski sets. Think winning skis is a bit pedestrian? Compete a bit harder and score 15 badges, and you’ll be entered to win a BMW X1 SUV.

Keep in mind a European ski vacation that ends in winning skis would still be a bit cheaper than M’s other snow-friendly offerings. After all, a X6 M will cost you $90,000, which is equal to about 15 round-trip, business class flights to Vienna.
