White Hot: Kia Records Best-Ever Sales in April, Hyundai Has Solid April

2011-kia-soul

Hyundai and Kia sales were hot again in April 2011, with the latter brand posting its best sales month in America to date. According to the automakers, Hyundai sold 61,754 units last month, while Kia moved 47,074 vehicles.

Hyundai - Up 40.3 Percent

Another month, another sales record for Hyundai. April 2011 represented Hyundai's second-best month in the U.S. The primary reason for this? Hyundai's hot new 2011 Elantra compact sedan. Sales in April jumped to 22,100 units, just enough to push it beyond the popular Sonata at 21,738 units. For perspective, Hyundai sold 9657 units of the last-generation Elantra in April 2010. Hyundai says this is the first time two models have surpassed 20,000 units of sales in the same month.

The Genesis line (coupe and sedan) was up 17 percent compared to the same month last year. Above the Genesis, the Equus full-size luxury sedan contributed 222 units in April, actually more than the far less expensive, about-to-be-replaced Azera and its 191 units. At the bottom of the lineup, the outgoing Accent subcompact saw sales increase by 46.8 percent. Hyundai's fleet sales comprised 11 percent of the automaker's total sales in April.

Kia - Up 56.7 Percent

You read that correctly, a 56.7 percent increase over April 2010. Interestingly, no one model was largely responsible for the sales gain. Forte sales jumped 47.0 percent to 8535 units and the Optima saw sales more than double from April 2010, to 6533 units. The same is true for the Sportage compact crossover (at 4738 units in April 2011), and even the Sedona minivan saw a more modest sales increase. The Sorento midsize crossover remains Kia's best-selling vehicle, with 12,001 vehicles leaving dealerships in April 2011, but the Soul -- with sales of 10,459 units last month -- and revamped Optima might just give the Sorento a challenge in the coming months.

Rio subcompact sales slid to 2575 units, but that will likely be reversed once the all-new 2012 model arrives in dealerships later this year. Discontinued ales chart shows the automaker sold 4 Rondos and 28 Borregos, but without a doubt, e guessing the Soul's 10,459-unit sales performance had a greater impact.
