Been away from your computer this week and missed all the automotive news? We’ve gathered a few of the top stories of the past week along with the weekend racing schedule for your convenience.
We take a drive in the latest from Saab, the 2012 9-4x; it may be based on General Motors parts, but is helping to pave the way forward for the now-independent brand. Also, we go for a spin in Nissan’s funky drop-top SUV, the 2011 Murano CrossCabriolet, and reacquaint ourselves with Dodges full-size 2011 Durango. And, lucky us, we get to blast around in the rare, Mosler Photon supercar.
Last month’s sales figures are in, and with gas prices on the rise consumers are heading toward more fuel-efficient cars. Luckily for automakers, many manufacturers have been rolling out brand-new, small-car offerings giving almost every manufacturer a sales boost in April.
GM is bringing home the bacon, having had its most profitable first quarter in over a decade. Of the $3.2 billion made, $1.7 billion came from selling cars and approximately $1.9 billion came in the form of unloading stakes in both Ally Financial (formerly GMAC) and Delphi.
Although the photos released by Mercedes this week showed a production-ready version of the SLS AMG Roadster supercar, small bits of camo were still hiding the badges. Worry not, as the three-pointed star has let us in on all the dirty details for the newest drop-top: 563 hp from the same 6.2-liter V-8 as the SLS AMG coupe, rear-wheel drive, and a convertible soft top that can be lowered at speeds up to 31 mph.
Working with Williams F1, Jaguar has decided to bring the gorgeous C-X75 supercar concept into production starting at the end of 2013 with a price tag of a cool $1.1 million. Similar to the concept, the production-spec C-X75 should have a small-displacement gasoline-powered engine paired with an electric motor on each axle, and be able to go about 31 miles in EV mode.
Well, that’s got to hurt. This week, Chevrolet issued a recall for 154,112 Cruze sedans -- almost the entire run since North American production began last fall. The recall was for a steering shaft that may have been incorrectly installed. Also, some 120,295 of those vehicles well also be checked for proper installation of the transmission shift linkage for the automatic transmission. Ouch.
