A high-performance version of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee crossover could be in the works, according to Allpar. The new report suggests that the SRT division will work its magic on the Jeep Cherokee and give it as much as 410 hp.
Allpar reports that an SRT version of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee would use a turbocharged 3.0-liter version of Chrysler Group's Pentastar V-6 engine, which could make about 375 hp. A twin-turbocharged version of that engine could produce as much as 410 hp -- a big amount of power for a relatively small crossover; the Cherokee confirmed for production weighs just 4106 lbs. All-wheel drive would be standard on the supposed SRT model, and the 2014 Jeep Cherokee would likely also receive several SRT-specific brake and suspension upgrades.
SRT has created powerful versions of many Chrysler Group vehicles -- the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, and Jeep Grand Cherokee -- but it seems less likely the 2014 Cherokee will be on the brand's radar. For one, Chrysler's five-year product plan leaves no opening for an SRT-tweaked crossover. The performance brand already refreshed the Grand Cherokee SRT for 2014, and is planning updates to the 300 SRT, Charger SRT, and Challenger SRT to be shown next year. Another vehicle is set to be refreshed in 2015, and an all-new product launches in 2016, which is expected to be a smaller muscle car called the SRT Barracuda or the convertible version of the Viper. In other words, we don't see any plans at this time for a Jeep Cherokee SRT.
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee (pictured) debuted at the New York auto show, and essentially replaces the Jeep Liberty. Powertrain choices comprise a 271-hp, 3.2-liter V-6 and a 184-hp, 2.4-liter inline-four, both of which are mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Both front- and all-wheel drive are offered, as is Jeep Active Drive Lock that features a low range and locking rear differential for off-roading. Pricing starts at $23,990 (including destination) for the 2014 Jeep Cherokee Sport and climbs to $30,490 for the Trailhawk model.
