Want a 2011 BMW 5 Series? You’ll Have to Wait…

BMW’s new 2011 5 Series has been an incredible hit with consumers, and the sedan is already sold out, forcing customers to wait up to four months for delivery.

BMW introduced a revamped 5 Series lineup this year with a variety of gasoline and diesel engines in most markets around the world. In the U.S., it’s sold with a 3.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-six, BMW’s new single-turbo 3.0-liter I-6, and a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8. Transmission choices are a six-speed manual or a new ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic. Those choices have proven popular with customers as the car has sold out.

And the good sales news isn’t limited to the U.S. -- the revamped 5 Series has been a resounding sales success in all of its markets.

“A lot of markets are performing well,” Ian Robertson, head of BMW sales and marketing, said at the Automotive News Europe Congress. “Overall we’re seeing good progress.”

We can’t blame customers for taking to the new 5 Series, as we’ve been impressed with our recently delivered Four Seasons 535i with the eight-speed automatic. We’ve only had it for a month, but after a long trip back from New Jersey with it, we’re excited about the prospect of spending a full year with it.

In terms of overall sales, BMW has seen an increase across its lineup and reported a 13 percent increase in May. BMW Group as a whole, including BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce, posted a 14 percent sales increase in the first quarter.

Although Robertson said sales in the second quarter are in line to match that increase, he is cautiously optimistic and sticking to the predicted single digit sales increase in light of rivals Mercedes-Benz and Audi’s goals of increasing market share. BMW has instead, decided to focus on profitability.

A popular BMW model that’s already sold out due to popular demand…haven’t we heard this before?
