Volvo Updates Entire Range, Minus XC90, V40

2014 is going to be a big year for Volvo: the Swedish carmaker just announced that it will facelift six of its models, four of which we get in the U.S. The revised S60, V60, XC60, V70, XC70, and S80 will all debut next month at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland.

First, the bad news: Volvo has confirmed that U.S. wagon buyers will continue to get the short shrift, and the V60 and V70 will remain exclusive to European buyers. That said, we will be able to enjoy the upgrades that the two wagons will gain in various models that we do receive here. The S60, XC60, XC70, and S80 (and V60 and V70) all gain larger Volvo "ironmark" badges and grilles, which are now more in line with the design shown on the V40 hatcback last year. (No, we're not getting that either).

The 60 cluster models all gain revised hoods and all-new front fascias. Grilles are wider and more oblong; the headlights are now squarer, single-piece units; and there are new LED running lights mounted in the lower intakes on the S60 and V60, or in place of the fog lights on the XC60. Around back are integrated tailpipes and update LED light pipes in the taillights.

Changes to the larger S80 and XC70 (and V70) are more subtle than those done to the 60 cluster cars. The S80 and V70 gain a slimmer, more-oval grille with horizontal brightwork. There is also a full-width lower intake with chrome trim and integrated LED running lights. The XC70 gets a larger, blacked-out grille with a chicken-wire-like pattern. The larger models all see revised LED taillights and additional chrome trim around the taillights.

Inside, all of the cars gain Volvo's Sensus Connected Touch infotainment system with internet connectivity and a new set of digital gauges. There is also a raft of new wheel choices, although the powertrains carry over unchanged for the U.S. market.

The one model devoid of any upgrade: The large XC90 crossover. That model wasn’t updated because it will be replaced with an all-new 2015 model sometime next year.
