Volvo has been busy lately, announcing all-new four-cylinder engines, and sophisticated safety features in future models, but a company executive has hinted the Swedish automaker it is thinking about bringing the Polestar Volvo S60 to production, and also bring about a tuned version of the new V40 hatchback.
Nick Connor, managing director of Volvo UK, told Autocar that the Swedish company is "in serious discussion with Polestar to try and make the S60 a reality." The original concept car was shown off in Sweden as a one-off commissioned by a Polestar customer, and Volvo said if there was sufficient market interest, the automaker would consider building more copies. Well, it appears there was more than enough interest, and we're not surprised.
The upgraded S60 underwent a thorough transformation, beginning with the engine. The turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine benefits from larger turbochargers, a new intake manifold, stronger connecting rods, and a new exhaust, boosting peak output to 508 hp and 424 lb-ft of torque. The Polestar also uses a specially upgraded six-speed manual transmission and a reinforced Haldex all-wheel-drive system.
Volvo fans are also starting to eye the new V40 hatchback as a contender for Polestar upgrades. A new report from PistonHeads is claiming that a Polestar-tuned V40 will make its debut at this fall's Paris Motor Show. The Polestar V40 would be based on the upcoming 245-hp, all-wheel drive V40 T5, which much of its mechanical pieces with the 2013 Ford Focus ST. PistonHeads reports that Connor says the new Polestar model would have at least 10 percent more power than the V40 T5. Competition for the Polestar V40 would come in the form of BMW's M135i and Audi's forthcoming S3, the former of which makes 320 hp.
Production numbers would be small, and Volvo has admitted to having enough parts to build 10 copies of the Polestar S60. Customers with the cash (at least $100,000) have already snapped up those cars, and not to say others will, too? At least if the Polestar V40 comes to fruition, it's projected to have a $46,860 price tag, and be slightly more accessible.
