Volkswagen Scirocco R to Debut at Nürburgring

Last November, we speculated that Volkswagen was readying a more potent version of its aggressive-looking Scirocco. VW even hinted at the future model by showing the Scirocco Study R at the 2008 Bologna Motor Show. Now the production version -- the 2009 Volkswage Scirocco R -- has been launched in Europe.

As anticipated, the Scirocco R boasts styling inspired by the Scirocco GT24 racers that took first and second in their class at the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring track last May. Styling enhancements include larger front air intakes with LED daytime running lights, a new grille, more aggressive side skirts, redesigned rear bumper, a roof spoiler and a set of sexy 18-inch wheels (19-inchers are optional).

The Scirocco R will be the most powerful of the Scirocco line, thanks to a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 that churns out 265-hp. That mill is available with either a six-speed manual or DSG transmission. With the DSG, the Scirocco R will run from 0 to 62 mph in 6.4 seconds, and will reach an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Putting that power to the pavement is the job of the XDS differential, which electronically limits wheel spin. The Scirocco R also boasts a lowered suspension and larger brakes in the front and rear.

Like the Scirocco GT24 racers themselves, the Scirocco R will also strut its stuff on the Nürburgring. VW will enter five teams, each fielding a race-prepped version in this year's 24-hour race.
