Video: Taking A Subaru WRX STI to Rally School

This episode of The J-Turn explores the dirtier side of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI as host Jessi Lang heads to the Dirt-Fish Rally School in Washington for lessons on racing through gravel and mud.

There, Lang gets expert instruction from senior rally instructor Dan Wooten, who points out the unique aspects of rally racing and the modified Subaru they will be driving. The day starts in the classroom, where Wooten explains the differences between grip surface driving and loose surface driving, the latter of which is used for rallying. He says the biggest difference between rally cars and other race cars is that the former must be road legal, since portions of rally courses take place on the street.

Finally, the pair hit the dirt starting with the skid pad, where Lang learns the basics of control in the WRX STI with her feet and not the wheel. Next, they progress to the slalom course before going to the Boneyard course, where applying everything they've learned is crucial. At the end, Lang escapes unscathed, but make sure to watch the video to find out how much damage the Subaru endured during the day.
