Upcoming BMW 3 Series GT Snapped Wearing Red

Those of you considering a 3 Series, but need more cargo versatility, will soon have two choices. The first variant is the wagon, which was unveiled recently. Next is the upcoming 3 Series Gran Turismo, which the folks over at Motor Trend recently caught testing out in the wild.

This tester is revealing much more skin compared to the previous prototype snapped last year. As expected, its shape is similar to the larger 5 Series GT, with an arching roofline that’s a bit higher than the sedan. While the 5 Series GT’s rear end has caused much controversy, BMW insiders have promised a more elegant and attractive execution on the 3 Series. The tester’s front end reveals similar design cues to the 3 Series sedan, but expect the GT to sport a few distinguishing characteristics.

Powertrain choices should also mirror the sedan. A 240-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder will serve as the base engine, and a turbocharged 3.0-liter turbo inline-six with 300 hp will be optional. Both engines should be paired to an eight-speed automatic, and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system will be made optional.

It’s no secret that the 5 Series GT hasn’t quite been the sales superstar that BMW had hoped for, mostly because Americans haven’t warmed up to its quirky styling. Will the 3 Series GT, essentially a carbon copy of its larger sibling, meet the same fate?

Head to Motor Trend for the complete set of photos.
