Tuner Thursday: Lumma Gifts BWW X6 Weird Interior, Decent Power

If you think BMW’s X6 lacks only a wild exterior and a quilted leather interior, it appears the folks at Lumma Design are of the same mind. The German tuner managed to incorporate both into its latest hopped-up X6, known as the CLR X 650.

The exterior receives a complete body kit, which lends the fastback X6 an extremely muscular look. Lumma adds a new front fascia with LED fog lamps, a new rear bumper fascia, side skirts, a vented hood, and a wild rear spoiler. Carbon fiber accents on the rear lip, mirror covers, headlight visors, and signature BMW twin-kidney grille add some contrast, but not as much as the paint job itself -- this particular example appears wear an unusual black-over-orange two-tone paint scheme. Lowering the suspension by 1.5 inches gives the X6 a mean stance, and adds emphasis to the giant 22-inch aluminum wheels, wrapped in performance-rated tires.

The X 650’s cabin is arguably just as wild as its exterior. Lumma selected a black and beige two-tone scheme, but elected to trim almost every surface -- including those on the four Recaro sport bucket seats -- with the material in a diamond-shaped stitch pattern. Trim pieces have been wrapped in coordinating Alcantara, while the gauge faces are painted a matching beige hue. Perhaps most unusual is the steering wheel itself -- Lumma somehow saw fit to integrate shift lights and a stopwatch into the upper half of the rim.

Although the entire package looks like a warped version of an X6 M, the X 650 actually burns oil. Lumma chose instead to base the entire vehicle off the European-spec X6 xDrive40d, which is mechanically similar to the X5 xDrive35d sold in the U.S. Lumma has treated the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel I-6 to some minor tweaks, including a performance exhaust and a reflashed engine computer. As a result, it now cranks out 340 horsepower and 494 pound-feet of torque, a mild improvement from the 306 horsepower and 442 pound-feet produced in stock tune.

All the pieces needed to create the CLR X 650 can be ordered individually, or as a whole package directly from Lumma Design, but pricing for either option has yet to be released. The whole kit-and-kaboodle will be on display in March at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.
