Mercedes-Benz has been hard at work to turn out limited-run “Black Series” models of its current lineup, but has not done one of its SLS AMG -- at least not yet. That’s where German tuning firm Kicherer’s SLS AMG Black Edition comes in.
Kicherer’s Black Edition takes a stock SLS AMG and turns it up a few notches. The tuning firm fits the SLS with a remapped ECU and stainless steel sports exhaust, allowing the 6.2-liter normally aspirated V-8 to crank out 620 horsepower -- 57 more than stock. Kicherer has not yet released performance figures, but Mercedes says the stock SLS will do 0 to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds and it’s a safe bet the Black Edition will be faster.
In addition to engine tuning, Kicherer revises the SLS’ aerodynamics and suspension. Kicherer fits the car with a carbon fiber front lip spoiler along with a carbon fiber rear diffuser to aid downforce. The Black Edition has a fully adjustable sport suspension, complete with a lift feature, to ease over speed bumps without damaging the front lip spoiler.
Although Kicherer gave its tuned SLS more track prowess, like Mercedes does with its Black Series models, the Black Edition name actually comes from the car’s black exterior. Kicherer wraps all of the car’s chrome exterior accents in a matte black foil, including the prominently displayed Mercedes logo. The exterior of the car is also done in matte black along with the new 20-inch RS-1 wheels, although they do feature chrome accent rings. A Kicherer hood badge rounds out the changes.
If you just can’t wait for a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series, if one is ever produced, Kicherer’s version is available now. As for price, you’ll have to give Kicherer a call on that.
