Name This Truck: Ram Plans Value-Priced, Sport-Tuned Pickup Model

It seems the new Ram Tradesman won’t be Chrysler’s only value-priced full-size pickup. In addition to the fleet-friendly Tradesman, Ram revealed it is also working on a sporty, affordable consumer model. The problem? It doesn’t know what to call the new trim level.

Press materials refer to the new model as the Adventurer, but Ram officials admit the name -- ripped out of Dodge’s history -- is merely a working title. Officials claim the model is being announced far earlier than originally intended, thanks in part to the overwhelming demand shown for the Tradesman. Like the Tradesman, so-called Adventurer models will pack a lot of content into an affordable package, but the difference lies in their target audiences. Tradesman models are gunning for commercial clients, while the Adventurer is touted as a blank canvas for first-time truck buyers who have some customization plans in mind.

“This is going to be a great looking sports truck,” Ram CEO Fred Diaz noted in a prepared release. “A buyer will be able to drive off in a new Hemi-powered Ram with money leftover for other things, like Mopar accessories.”

As is the case with the Tradesman, Ram Adventurer models will be based off regular-cab, two-wheel-drive Ram 1500 models, and will be fitted with a short box as standard equipment. Also thrown into the mix is a little extra power -- in lieu of the traditional base V-6, Adventurers will receive the 390-horsepower, 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 and a five-speed automatic at no extra charge.

Also included in the package are body-colored front and rear bumpers, fog lamps, chromed exhaust tips, 20-inch aluminum wheels, tinted windows, air conditioning, and a 3.55:1 rear axle ratio. Those looking to quickly install their own seating won’t be miffed at the standard vinyl-trimmed 60/40/60 split bench, but a cloth-trimmed unit is available.

Other options include chrome tubular side steps, chromed bed rails, trailering mirrors, a spray-in bedliner, and a limited-slip differential. An optional class IV tow hitch paired with standard heavy-duty engine and transmission cooling and 4 and 7-pin trailer wiring harnesses allow the truck to tow up 10,450 pounds. Four-wheel-drive is also available.

Ram hasn’t settled on a name (may we suggest CSS, or perhaps Warlock?), but it has locked in pricing for the new model. The Adventurer model is expected to sticker for $24,805 (including $975 in destination fees), which is roughly $1050 more than the Tradesman’s starting price. Look for the new model to reach Ram dealers nationwide in the second quarter of 2011.

IMO this is a great move on RAM'S part. Hopefully this approach will trickle down to Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and all other manufacturers..... It seems to me that offering a basic, decently equipped platform and allowing the customer to decide what they want instead of loading every vehicle up to the max, will help move more vehicles and profits can be made on volume instead of trying to make all the profit on a few sales.......
