Taking a road trip from Los Angeles to New York City is considered by most people to be a pretty long haul, at approximately 2800 miles coast-to-coast. But Russia covers roughly twice the area of the lower 48 contiguous states. An equivalent coast-to-coast trip in Russia from Vladivostok to St. Petersburg is more than triple the distance at 9600 miles. As a way to prove the durability of the new 2014 Mazda 3, the company's U.K. operations are staging a Hiroshima to Frankfurt journey traversing 9300 miles of Russia's territory, from Vladivostok to Moscow, before the final leg to Germany.
The convoy of eight Mazda 3 hatchbacks are now one-third of the way across their 9300-mile trip, with a stop in the city of Krasnoyarsk, including an inspection at the local Mazda dealer, where the cars checked out with flying colors.
The journey is part of Mazda Motors UK's "Mazda Route3 – Hiroshima to Frankfurt Challenger Tour 2013" with included invitations to the British media and British Mazda dealers, who participated on the first leg of the trip. All the vehicles were similarly-equipped, with 1.6-liter 120-hp Skyactiv I-4 gasoline engines and six-speed manual transmissions, a powertrain combination not offered on U.S.-spec Mazda 3 models. The cars are scheduled to arrive in Frankfurt, Germany on September 7, three days before the opening of the Frankfurt Motor Show.
