According to Toyota’s Australian PR office, the company will launch a vehicle down under that is “designed to bring young urban trend setters to the Toyota family.” Sound like a Scion? From what we can tell, it actually is.
The photo above is a teaser of the Rukus, a new offering planned for Toyota’s Aussie lineup. According to Scott Thomas, Toyota Australia’s marketing manager, the Rukus is “a car that’s designed to be different, with a boxy shape that has become iconic.”
That pretty much describes what we in America know as the xB, and from looking at the lone teaser image, we wouldn’t be surprised if that were the case. Apart from a slightly different fake air intake on the bumper fascia, the Rukus appears to be a carbon copy of the xB.
Fittingly, it seems as if the marketing plan also copies that used by Scion in North America.
“[The Rukus] will be loaded with great standard features,” said Thomas, “but we expect many owners to express their individuality by making their car stand out from the pack. That might involve wild paint jobs, funky wheels, or other ideas, limited only the imagination of owners -- and what’s legal. Potential customers have told us they want this style of car. We’ve listened and we’ve responded.”
Toyota has not yet set a firm on sale date for the car, but says it will be before the middle of the year. As for price, it will likely slot in just above the Toyota Yaris in the Australian lineup.
