Toyota has announced that it will recall 82,200 hybrid SUVs to correct a fault in the electronic controller for the hybrid drivetrain. The control unit could overheat and cause the vehicle to lose power.

The Problem: The Intelligent Power Module for the Toyota’s Hybrid System Inverter could fail prematurely. Some transistors were poorly soldered to the control board, and could be damaged under heat caused by high-load driving. If the IPM fails, the vehicle either enters a low-power “limp” mode and warning lights will illuminate on the dashboard. In severe cases, the power supply fuse will blow, and the vehicle will coast to a stop.

The Fix: Toyota first must work to obtain an adequate supply of replacement parts. Once they are available, Toyota will notify owners and repair the vehicles for free.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 45,500 2006 - 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrids, 36,700 2006 - 2007 Lexus RX400h Hybrids
