Toyota announced it would halt production and sales of eight different models that are subject to an accelerator pedal recall issued last week. The recall, which affects 2.3 million existing vehicles, involves sticking accelerator pedals that could potentially cause unintended acceleration.
<;P class=MsoNormal>That recall was separate from a previous recall affecting more than 4 million vehicles that involved accelerator pedals becoming lodged under incorrect or improperly installed floor mats. That recall was issued in response to the death of a California Highway Patrolman and three members of his family when he was unable to stop his loaner Lexus ES 350 with incorrect floor mats that had become trapped on the accelerator pedal.
<;P class=MsoNormal>“Toyota has investigated isolated reports of sticking accelerator pedals in certain vehicles without the presence of floor mats,” Toyota said in a release. “There is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position.”
<;P class=MsoNormal>As a result of the announcement, production and sales of the Toyota RAV4, Corolla, Matrix, Avalon, Camry, Highlander, Tundra, and Sequoia will be halted for the week of February 1 “to assess and coordinate activities,” according to Toyota. The production halt will affect Toyota’s Canada, Indiana, Kentucky, and Texas assembly plants. Toyota has clarified that no Scion or Lexus vehicles are affected by the recall, nor are the Toyota Prius, Tacoma, Sienna, Venza, Solara, Yaris, 4Runner, FJ Crusier, Land Cruiser, or Camry Hybrid models.
<;P class=MsoNormal>“Helping ensure the safety of our customers and restoring confidence in Toyota are very important to our company,” said Bob Carter, group vice president and Toyota division general manager. “This action is necessary until a remedy is finalized. We’re making every effort to address this situation for our customers as quickly as possible.”
