Toyota Prius Production Boosted by 70%

2008 Toyota Prius

An insatiable demand for the Toyota Prius hybrid is prompting the automaker to increase production by nearly seventy percent.

Although it plans on opening an American plant for the Prius, Toyota is working to boost the capacity of its factory in Tsutsumi, Japan, to meet demand in the meantime.; Home to four different models, the Tsutsumi plant will make room for more Priuses by shifting assembly of the Wave micro-minivan to another factory.

The facility produced nearly 281,000 cars in 2007; it's expected to produce 480,000 cars in 2009.; The boost will help satisfy U.S. demand for the Prius until the Mississippi plant comes on-line in 2010.
