Toyota develops First-Ever Rear-Seat Center Airbag

Tom Ludwick

Toyota has come up with a new Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) that protects back-seat passengers in the even of a collision. The rear-seat center airbag is the first in the world.

The airbag deploys from a center console in the back seat. In the case of a side-impact collision, the airbag prevents rear seat passengers from colliding with each other or into the console.

We're not sure which vehicle(s) will receive the technology or when Toyota intends to start implementing it in its vehicles. The company merely says the breakthrough will be offered in "a version of a Toyota model to be launched in Japan in the near future."
