Hot on the heels of Ferrari’s 2009 F60 Formula One car launch, Toyota introduced its 2009 Formula One car – the TF109.
Toyota showed significant progress during the 2008 Formula One season by scoring a total of 56 points, more than it did in the 2006 and 2007 seasons combined. With the new TF109, Toyota hopes to give its drivers a competitive car that will put Toyota on the top podium spot for the first time.
To meet the 2009 aerodynamic regulations, every team started from a clean sheet design. Toyota started development in October 2007 once the 2009 rules were set. The new regulations are apparent on the TF109 with the wider front wing and narrower rear spoiler. The decrease in aerodynamic downforce warranted the return of slick tires after a twelve-year hiatus.
Toyota has not released any specifications on the car or its KERS system. However, it did however that its Senior General Engine Manager, Luca Marmorini, has departed from the team. Toyota achieved 100% engine reliability under Marmorini, and aims to achieve a similar result in the 2009 season even though engine life has been lengthened.
Pre-season testing on the TF109 begins January 19 at Algarve Motor Park in Portugal. Expect to see a third driver, 22-year-old Kamui Kobayashi, joining Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli at the 2009 F1 season opener in Melbourne, Australia in late March.
