September sales were slow for many automakers and that was no different in the compact segment. Despite that trend, the Toyota Corolla earned the top spot in September with 23,251 sold, beating out August's winner, the Honda Civic.
The Honda Civic was second with a solid 22,983 sold. Though down compared to the Toyota Corolla for September, the Honda Civic has a massive lead in year-to-date sales over the rival Toyota Corolla. Coming in third place was the Hyundai Elantra, with 19,691 sold, pushing both the Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cruze further down the chart.

The Ford Focus finished in fourth place with 16,733 sold. The Volkswagen Jetta and Jetta Sportwagen – possibly on the strength of the updated-for-2014 sedan – jumped up to fifth place with 13,309 sold. The Chevrolet Cruze fell hard into sixth place with 12,730 units due to what one source says are "delivery issues."
Sitting in seventh is the Mazda3 with 8646 sold. Though that’s a dramatic drop as compared to last year, the sales decrease is likely due to the fact that production of the new 2014 Mazda3 is just ramping up. The Dodge Dart continues to gain steam, with its 7922 units sold putting it in eighth. The 7798 Nissan Sentras sold last month give Nissan ninth place, while sales of the Subaru Impreza and last-gen Impreza WRX/STI combine for a 10th-place finish, with 5789 sold.
September's compact auto sales are rounded out by the Kia Forte with 4618 sold, and the outgoing Volkswagen Golf/GTI in last with 2127 cars sold.
