Tokyo 2011: New Altima, Possibly Quest To Get New Supercharged 2.5 Hybrid Powertrain

Automobile Staff

Information about Nissan’s 2.5 liter in-house hybrid powertrain have been out for a while, but today comes more details about future applications for the powertrain. It will work in all of Nissan's front-wheel drive platforms and be mated to the next-generation version of Nissan’s Xtronic continuously variable transmission, and has been confirmed to go into the next Altima.

What we didn't know up to now was what U.S. market vehicle or vehicles it would debut under the hood of, but all signs pointed to the next-generation Nissan Altima. The first Altima Hybrid used a version of Toyota's  hybrid system, and when it was discontinued Nissan loudly hinted that it would return to the hybrid sedan market at some point in the future with its own system.

That time is almost here. According to Nissan officials here in Tokyo at the 2011 Tokyo show, the new Altima, which we have spied recently, will indeed get the new hybrid under the hood.

Nissan proudly displayed the new hybrid at a pre-show event, extolling the virtues of the supercharged unit that it says will offer the power of its present 3.5-liter V-6 (around 260 hp) with of course lower emissions and higher fuel economy, which will more than likely match or beat the 39/43 mpg city/highway rating of the new 2012 Camry Hybrid, among others.

A Nissan engineer we spoke with also hinted that the system would fit neatly in the Nissan Quest. If that were to become a reality it would be the first hybrid minivan, that is if someone else doesn't beat them to the punch.

We will know more soon when the new Altima makes its debut, more than likely early next year at a domestic auto show.
