To celebrate the Ford Thunderbird's 55th anniversary, the Water Wonderland Thunderbird Club invited Thunderbird owners around the country to the "Return to Dearborn Thunderbird" reunion event.

"The Ford Thunderbird is one of the most iconic products in the history of the automobile," said Jim Farley, vice president of Ford's global marketing. "Each generation of the Thunderbird had a unique personality that ushered in a new generation of breakthroughs in design or technology."

During the three-day event, participants will have the chance to see Ford's world headquarters and the surrounding area. It includes special events such as a photo shoot at Ford's Dearborn, Michigan, proving grounds; a drive into neighboring Greenfield Village; and a viewing of the Henry Ford Estate. The registered participants were also invited to a barbecue at the Henry Hotel and a breakfast at the Estate.

In addition to the events above, a special car show is planned for the last day of the event. If you're a Thunderbird aficionado or owner, and didn't register for the event, you can still see the T-Birds at a car show open to the public tomorrow (Saturday) at Ford's Dearborn headquarters from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Because each generation of Thunderbird was unique, at least one car from every year will be represented at the event. The Thunderbird first went on sale on October 22, 1954 as a 1955 model. Production continued uninterrupted until 1997, when production of the tenth-generation Thunderbird was halted. An eleventh generation, however, entered production in 2002 and was produced until 2005.

As of yesterday when the event kicked off, over 300 Thunderbirds were registered to attend. The vehicles are from more than 30 states, including the far reaches of California. If you're local to southeast Michigan, or want to take a drive to see some classic metal, head over to the car show tomorrow to see the vast exhibit of Thunderbirds.
