Gas and car insurance can be expensive, but how do driving costs in your state compare to those in other states? That's what a new report from CarInsurance.com attempts to find out by detailing the states with the highest gas and insurance costs along with an "Automotive Misery Index," which takes a look at the geographical cost variables in car ownership.
Using a 2012 Honda Accord EX as a base car, the index compares the cost of gas, number of miles driven, and the price of insurance coverage for all 50 states. While Wyoming drivers may spend more money on gas and insurance according to CarInsurance.com, as a percentage of the average household income, it doesn’t compare on the Misery Index to other states like West Virginia and Mississippi.
On the other side of the list are states like New Hampshire and Alaska, both of which earn placement on the Top 10 list of the least expensive to maintain (gas and insurance costs). On average, the report found the U.S. drivers travel 14,133 miles in their cars each year and have a Misery Index of 7.0 percent. Find your state here.
