Tesla Reveals Photos and Specifications of Roadster Sport

Although it had teased such a model in the past, Tesla Motors today released more information--along with these snazzy photos--of its most extreme offering, the Roadster Sport. In a sense, the Roadster Sport is to the Roadster as the Lotus Elise SC is to the Elise: the same, lithe package, but with more power and sharper chassis tuning.

For starters, Tesla revised the Roadster Sport’s electric drive motor. The AC induction motor now produces 288hp (215kW), a 16-percent increase in power over a normal Roadster. The extra power means the roadster will spring from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, making it two-tenths of a second quicker than a base Roadster.

Tesla also eschewed the Roadster’s suspension design for a new track-friendly setup, which includes adjustable dampers and anti-roll bars. Sport models also receive stickier Yokohma A048 performance tires wrapped around black forged aluminum wheels.

Along with those rims, Tesla hopes to differentiate the Roadster Sport from its tamer sibling with exposed carbon fiber surfaces on the rear wing and hood louvers, smoked headlamps, and Sport emblems. Pricing reportedly begins at $128,500 (excluding destination charges and any applicable tax offsets), which is approximately a $19,500 premium over a normal Roadster.
