Tell Us: How Will New Naming Scheme Affect 2014 Infiniti Q50?

A wholly re-imagined corporate naming scheme means that Infiniti's next entry sports sedan will be called the Q50, ending the reign of the G25/35/37 designation that has heretofore marked Infiniti's BMW 3 Series fighter. But is the new name an opportunity for Infiniti to reinvent its reputation, or a mistake that will confuse car shoppers?

Infiniti announced yesterday that it will ditch its alphabet collection of car names -- G, M, EX, FX, JX, and QX -- in favor of simply Q and QX. The former applies to sedans, coupes, and convertibles; the latter is for crossovers and SUVs. A two-digit number signals each vehicle's rank in thebrand hierarchy, so the car line runs from the Q50 sports sedan to the Q70 luxury sedan, while the SUV range will go from QX50 to QX80. Confused yet?

The rechristening begins with the switch to the 2014 Infiniti model year, and the first new product following the naming convention will be the Q50 –otherwise known as G37 replacement. It will be revealed in January at the Detroit auto show, and should go on sale by the middle of 2013. Whereas the G37 was sold as a coupe, convertible, and sedan, the Q50 will be sedan-only, and two-door versions become the Q60.

Our information suggests the revised Infiniti sports sedan will use an updated version of its current 3.7-liter V-6 engine, although there's the potential for a Mercedes-Benz-sourced mill at a later date. (Infiniti and Mercedes have a deal to share powertrains and platforms in the future.) Other upgrades, likely targeting the car's suspension and refinement, will help the Infiniti Q50 keep pace with German rivals like the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class, and Audi A4/S4. It will most likely adopt Infiniti's new steer-by-wire technology, at least as an option.

An Infiniti Q50 prototype we spied in Germany revealed that the car will grow slightly compared to the current G37 (pictured). A rectangular front grille, swept-back headlights, and a tapered hood dominate the front end; dual exhaust tips, a curved trunk lid, and angled taillights define the rear. A curved, sloping roofline emphasizes the additional length of the 2014 Q50 compared to the G37.

The big unknown is how the name change will affect the new Infiniti models. Will customers recognize that the Q50 is a successor to the G37 sedan, or consider it a brand-new model from the Japanese luxury marque? And will customers understand the hierarchy and differences between all the Q and QX vehicles on display at an Infiniti showroom? Infiniti is confident the name change will only be a positive.

"We concluded that 'Q' captured the inspiration within the next generation of Infiniti models,as well as emphasizing our performance credentials," Infiniti global president Johan de Nysschen said in a statement.

I have to admit that I am very lukewarm to the change of the naming nomenclature of the Infiniti line-up.  I think that the first rule of engineering applies here: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

The Infiniti brand resurged on the backs of the "G", "M", "EX" and "FX" badges.  This is what people have come to know and love.  It is how the world identifies the, once-more popular brand.  I read the statement made by Johan de Nysschen (President Infiniti Motor Company Limited).  He said:

"There are no suitable combinations of Alphanumeric naming options remaining that are not already trademarked by another automaker. In order to expand our line up with the fascinating new models we are developing, we must create a more flexible nomenclature philosophy." " ... Our new advanced technology engines under development will be smaller, lighter, more fuel efficient yet more powerful ... I'm sure you will agree, it would be a bit odd to have a powerful, luxurious and refined V8 powered Infiniti M56, then position a new high-tech 550+ horsepower performance flagship for the Infiniti M range above it, using a potent charged induction V6, but then call it Infiniti M30, which we would be obliged to do, following our current naming logic."

"Infiniti owns the naming assets of Q plus double digit, and QX plus double digit. And it is a permanent part of our heritage."This thinking I understand but if the aim is to increase market share and profitability, monkeying with your loved and easily identifiable brand-recognition is a very risky move.  Besides, I don't see how the new naming convention is any more flexible than the current.  There is no distinction between a 2WD and 4WD model, to begin with.

The new naming style also disenfranchises current Infiniti owners.  I know, I feel that way.  I love my Inifiniti G sedan and having enjoyed it for only 18 months before the new naming takes effect, I feel extensively and prematurely dated.

I hope that Infiniti finds a way to be sensitive to those of us who are feeling a bit "jilted".

Wow this sucks. I loved how my g35 was called a g. Or i cant say its nothing but a g thang and refer to my car.Now I cant say im driving in my g. Now I gotta say im drivin in my q? Pretty g a y if u ask me. How could u do this infiniti? Its not gona feel the same anymore. Lets just hope they still have that sexy back end that is one of a kind. The g35/37 taillights anf bumper are drop dead gorgeous . I hope that its faster with more features. If not tjen I think this is the worse decision u have made mr .Infiniti

Ah, Marketing. These are the same type idiots that tried to kill the Miata name and decided all Fords must have names starting with "F",  and help kill off Oldsmobile by leaving the Oldsmobile name off the Aurora.  There must be a place for these people, but never in a decision making one.

The original Q45 flagship was one of the best looking Infinitis, ever. But few will remember it, since the world seemed to prefer the novocaine offered up by Lexus at the time (and still, LFA excepted).They haven't answered how they will addressed engine and drivetrain variants. Q51AWD?!!?The QX56 and M sedan are simply unattractive vehicles. Curves and bulges gone wild. Parent company Nissan is even worse. The new Altima, Sentra, and Versa are some of the most forgettable, frumpy vehicles I've seen. Don't get me started on Joke... er... Juke. They've produced a few stunners in the past. Time to get back to that, rather than focusing on monikers.

Yeah,  this won't help Infiniti at all. If I had to mention one iconic Infiniti model, it would be the original Q sedan, and this overuse of the letter "Q" helps to remind me of this models departure.   This is a weird shift from a Mercedes style naming scheme to an Audi style naming scheme, which seems like a lateral move from a marketing perspective.
