Suzuki Reveals Four Concepts, iV-4 Crossover For Tokyo

Suzuki will bring four funky concept cars to the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show next month under the banner, "Let's Create Brand New Story." In addition, Suzuki will show off the iV-4 crossover that goes on sale in Europe in 2015.

The first concept is called the Crosshiker, and builds on the Suzuki G70 concept that was shown at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. The curvy compact crossover has a tiny greenhouse and, indeed, the entire vehicle has compact outside dimensions. Lightweight construction means the car weighs just 1785 pounds, while a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine helps keep fuel efficiency high. As with its G70 predecessor, Suzuki says the Crosshiker concept is, "Eco-friendly on the inside while having a design with personality that would evoke passion in users."

Next up is the Suzuki X-Lander concept, inspired by the company's popular Jimny off-roader. With its fat tires, high ground clearance, flared fenders, and speedster-like windshield, the X-Lander is a futuristic take on the compact 4x4. Beneath the hood is a 1.3-liter engine and a hybrid system for the four-wheel drive. Suzuki says that it intends for drivers to “use this car in the city as well as sometimes go out to play in the field," so the X-Lander concept can handle both paved and unpaved roads.

Suzuki will also show off two versions of the Hustler concept, a standard tall-but-narrow hatchback and a sportier coupe version. The regular Hustler has the narrow, upright proportions typical of Japanese microcars, but its high ground clearance and black fender cladding are meant to evoke visions of a small crossover. Suzuki calls it, "a stylish yet practical design with plenty of SUV touches." The Hustler Coupe concept, meanwhile, has a raked roofline, hidden rear door handles, and red-accented wheels.

Finally, Suzuki's stand will feature the iV-4, a compact crossover that is headed for production. Inspired by the company's long line of small off-roaders -- including the Jimny and Grand Vitara -- the aggressive iV-4 goes on sale in Europe in 2015. It features a new version of Suzuki's four-wheel-drive system, called ALLGRIP, and has modern styling cues with aggressive creases and angles. The car was previewed earlier this year at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.
